can we maybe stop shitting on people who live with their parents past the age of 18? because i see so many posts going “lmao u still live with ur mom???? sad lol” which is pretty gross. a lot of people live with their parents because they cant afford to move out on their own, or their parents need help either physically of financially, or they need help physically or financially, or they legitimately dont want to.

so tldr; dont shit on people who dont move out the instant they turn 18.

fun fact: the idea that it’s normal or expected for people to move out their parents’ house is barely more than a hundred years old. up until then, you only moved if you had to. and half  the time, you’d bring the entire household along.

Not to mention, moving out at 18 (or as soon as possible) is a hugely western concept! In many other cultures, you stay home with your family until you get married, or you don’t move out at all!

My emotions are valid*

*valid does not mean healthy, or good, or to be privileged above common sense and kindness

A distinction for anyone who is young and hasn’t figured this out yet:

You are allowed to have whatever emotions you want. No one can control your emotions. Emotions are healthy responses to things.

You are not allowed to have behaviors that are harmful just because you have certain emotions. Your behaviors are what you can control, and they are far easier to control than your emotions.

You can be jealous about someone or their talents until you turn green, but it is harmful to yourself and to that person if you try to sabotage them because of it. You can be so angry you can literally feel your temperature rise, but this does not give you permission to rage at others.

Your emotions are valid. They are always valid. You are a person of value. However, you behaviors are not always justified just because of those emotions. You may not be able to control you emotions, but you can certainly control your behaviors.

“You may not be able to control your emotions, but you can certainly control your behaviors.”

You don’t have to reblog posts.

Really, you don’t. I know a lot of people on here say that you have to, like fanfics and art and such, and I get it– really, I do, I’m a content creator! –and I love reblogs as much as the next person.

But that pressure from creators can give you anxiety. So this is me reminding you that you don’t have to reblog anything.

Maybe you don’t agree with every little thing on the post. Maybe you thought it was just okay. Maybe you just didn’t have the energy to hit the button.

It’s okay. You’re allowed to dislike things, to be neutral, to be too tired. You shouldn’t have to come onto this website just to feel guilty.

Reblogs are great and always appreciated, but if you don’t, it won’t be the end of the world. Even if other people may act like that. Don’t feel obligated to if it’s giving you anxiety.

At the very least, you don’t have to reblog my posts. I’ve been there. I’m not upset with you.

do u ever remember all the horrible offensve things u said when u were like 15 and u literally feel ur soul detach and turn 2 dust

your fave is problematic: yourself

Basically, yeah. That’s kind of the point – you always have to look back on yourself and be mortified and resolve to be better.

Shit, the stuff I said just five YEARS ago (and I’m almost 33) makes me cringe like a motherfucker.

Burn in mortification. Rise from the ashes and be better. Lather, rinse, repeat for the rest of your life.

This is why purity culture doesn’t work!!! We’re all shit! We can all grow and do better!

apparently controversial fucking opinion: some of us need closed captions/subtitles to understand what is being said in a video and don’t want to see fan transcribers demolishing captions with zalgo text or giving their own commentary/cracking stupid jokes when we turn those on

i promise your jokes/theories/fucking leet speek for some reason can stay in the comments and not in the captions where i have to keep rewatching the video to figure out if that’s actually being said or not

stop putting your own jokes/commentary on what’s being said in the video!

if the video is silent while someone is doing something, there are no needed captions! stop putting weird summaries of what’s happening visually!

i guess i can technically read these yes but holy shit it’s annoying cut it out

i’m glad you suddenly realized captions support stylized text but stop using it, neither of those words had any spoken emphasis on them and this stuff only makes it harder to read captions at a glance

and that’s what captions are for- i need to be able to glance at them so i can continue to watch the video while i know what’s being said. i don’t know what’s being said if they’re cluttered with your unnecessary jokes, and i can’t glance at them and call it good if they’re stylized or written weirdly or full of emoticons and stuff.

You must be fun at parties😐

oh my god shut up, it isn’t “not being fun at parties” or “killing the joke” some people are deaf and hard of hearing or have auditory/sensory processing difficulties that make it difficult to hear, especially with or dialects.

subtitles are there to give accessibility to these people, not for you to have a laugh in and to make the text difficult to read. it’s an accessibility tool not a school note book.

if you want to do this make your own gifs and put fake subtitles on them if you have to. make a parody video. just don’t kill the video for an entire group of people in the name of “fun”

I do freelance captioning as basically my only income rn. If you wanna help out and caption videos of your fave YouTubers but want to make sure they’re readable and legitimately helpful for the people that need them, here’s some tips taken directly from the style guide I have to hold myself to:

  • Keep all your captions under 60 characters. Any more than that, it becomes difficult for some people to read them quickly enough.
  • Break your captions at logical places. Sometimes you’ll need to break a caption mid-sentence to keep it under 60 characters, and that’s fine, so long as you break them in places where it makes sense to! Logical places to break captions include:
    • at the end of every sentence
    • when the speaker pauses to take a breath
    • at a conjunction, such as “but” or “and”
    • when a natural pause in speech happens
  • Indicate a change of speaker by using a dash and a space at the beginning of their sentence. If they’re off screen or otherwise not visible, label them [ Like So ], otherwise labels are unnecessary.
    • Example:
      – So I said to him, “No, you shut up.”
      – [ Mark ] Haha, dude, you’re so wild.
  • Only caption non-speech if it’s necessary to understand what’s happening. If someone falls and it makes a loud noise, for example, you can caption it “(loud crashing)” or something similar, always in parenthesis. Sounds to caption include:
    • something that’s the video is focusing on
    • something a character reacts to
    • sounds made by a speaker, such as laughing.
    • music that is not faded into the background
      • if you know the name of the song, you can label the song, such as “(We Will Rock You by Queen)”, otherwise you can just label the tone, such as “(inspirational music)”
  • Do not ever stylize text. Keep as grammatically correct as you can (e.g. proper capitalization, punctuation, etc) without correcting the speaker’s grammar.
  • Do NOT omit words or add words in. Do not change what the speaker is saying AT ALL.
    • The only exception to this rule is false starts. If a speaker starts with “Um, so uh, about the topic at hand…” it’s usually fine if you just caption it “About the topic at hand…”. This helps with readability, and it’s the only time removing words is ever okay. But if you’re in doubt or worried, leave it all in.

Remember that captions are a tool, not a toy. It’s AWESOME if you want to help. But captions are not where jokes go. Please make sure they’re as legible and accurate as possible.

please be nice to autistic folks who ask for explanations of jokes, memes, sarcasm, etc. or who ask you to repeat what you say/expand on your thought in another way. we are trying our best to follow along… but sometimes a train of thought is just ??? confusing as hell. it costs 0 dollars to be nice to someone who is just trying to understand…thank you for your time

Not to get political but my philosophy is fundamentally that all people should suffer less. That it’s everyone’s responsibility to try to make the world a little better for everyone else. And anyone trying to do the opposite is an asshole who needs to stop.

noah fence, but some things youve all decided are Universally Cringey And Embarrassing are only that way because society arbitrarily (or not so arbitrary often times) says so, but y’all are either too cowardly or eager to have excuses to bully people to challenge those norms lmfao
