I keep telling kids at work they can read manga and watch anime for free online and they’re like “but that’s illegal” and I’m like. Trying to find a way to tell them that it doesn’t matter without being a bad influence

When I was in middle school we watched anime episodes in three part videos on YouTube and no one gave a damn about the law

Alright so like. PSA. I’m in a family full of law enforcement officers and I just gotta say. It’s not really illegal. It’s illegal if you’re making a profit. Example:

It IS illegal if:

Say I own a cruise line. I show movie night and charge $3 a person to see this movie. 200 people show up so therefore I’m making $600 per movie I show. I got the movie off of 123 movies. I’ve made a profit and I continue to do it. This would be considered illegal.

It is NOT illegal if:

I’m sitting at home and want to watch a movie for pure entertainment and making no profit.

Reblog to clear a bootleg watcher’s conscience

Honestly I dont know enough about law, but something about this claiming to be legal doesnt sound right. Anyways consider this, even if it was illegal, it doesnt make it morally wrong to pirate. Seriously theres so much proof how piracy really doesnt affect sales, all these laws do is to prevent accessibility to media for certain people.

Piracy is not inherently morally wrong. It can be used to do wrong, like pirating instead of buying from an independent creator is more likely morally wrong than pirating from huge movie companies like fucking Disney who try to extort every last dollar from their consumers. Pirating from morally bankrupt companies is so insignificant in comparison to the evil these corporations normalize that it really does not matter.

What these companies don’t seem to understand is that typically when someone pirates a thing the alternative is not buying it. If you take away the means to pirate a thing, it’s not going to make your sales go up. People who pirate either don’t have the money to spend on your thing right now or they’re not interested enough to pay for it ever. At most, they might watch it if it ever happens to come on a TV service they have access to….

The other thing they haven’t yet realized is that creating too many streaming services will push pirates right back into piracy… Netflix? Sure yeah, one service is financially manageable. Hulu? Yeah, I guess I could manage another one. Prime video? Eh, it’s free with Amazon Prime. Wait…. No… Disney… Stop. Please…. What is happening? Did you guys know that there was a time when channels like CBS and Fox let you stream episodes for free with commercials without logging in to your TV provider’s account? It’s how I watched the entirety of Star Trek TOS for the first time. But that’s gone now.

It’s time to raise your pirate flag high and remind them what it was like before streaming was a thing.

Just remember: DO NOT pirate books- the creator you’re hurting is the author. If you can’t afford to buy a copy (physical or ebook), request it at the library. If they dont have it, they can get it, and the request lets them know there’s interest in this author’s work.

DO NOT pirate comics- DC and Marvel are big companies, but they make decisions about which titles to continue making based off of print sales (mostly first-run floppies, but also collected omnibus editions). If you dont have a local comic store you’re comfortable at, you can order them online from a variety of online pull list services and have them shipped to you. Digital copies are also largely available, and again, you can request omnibus books at your local library.

Libraries work with media beyond books and printed information. Most have a movie and music collection, and many also have digital media available. To bring it back around to the original subject, some have even built manga and anime collections. Most importantly, they’re free. The key is, if you don’t see what you’re looking for, request it. It’s a win-win-win scenario. The creator gets paid for their work, the library’s circulation numbers get a boost (they need to keep those numbers up to ensure funding), and you get to enjoy that thing you wanted for free!

Shocking

This kinda reminds me of those studies that said women who own horses live longer, but no one realized that it isn’t because horses are some cure all (even though it feels like they are imo) but because women who could afford to own horses could also afford to see the doctor regularly

The first week of my college statistics course, when we were learning the difference between correlation and causation, and we were given a graph that looked like this:

It was made with real data. It wasn’t a falsified graph. It just happened to miss the variable which was the actual causation: age.

Whenever you come across two variables that appear to have a causative relationship, always make sure you take a step back and see if there’s another reason for the correlation of your data. A large portion of the time, there is.

I grew up in a poly household. My mother was married to two men who loved her dearly and they were the best of friends. I use past tense due to the fact that one of my fathers passed away a few years back.

I grew up in one of the most stable, loving households I can imagine. I had tons of support from all three of my parents, I never felt alone, and I never felt confused about my parents relationship.

Were other people confused when I told them about my parents? Sure. Did it take some time for them to understand my parents relationship? Yep. And the reaction I got every single time from other kids once they understood? “That’s so awesome!”

Growing up in a poly house did not hurt me, confuse me, or make my life difficult. It sure as hell wasn’t abusive.

Healthy poly relationships do not hurt children.

I really want some more recognition for poly relationships. This is a lovely post and a step in the right direction. Couples consisting of two people can be dysfunctional. It’s not just poly relationships.

I’ve already seen discourse on Twitter about Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend bc apparently, 46 ISN’T age appropriate for a 55 year old man or something and I’m starting to think some people don’t understand the discussion about age gap relationships….it’s not about age gaps themselves, it’s about adults dating people who aren’t adults (usually teenagers). But also, 46 and 55 is age appropriate jfc

Yeah bruh it’s not the actual gap ffs people, it’s the age gap RELATIVE TO THE PEOPLE’S AGES

Let’s see some examples:

3 year gap between a 15 and 18 year old: BAD. ILLEGAL. FUCKED UP.

3 year gap between a 30 and 33 year old: they’re practically the same age

10 year gap between a 25 and 35 year old: hmm kinda weird, might let it slide, but no.

10 year gap between a 60 and 70 year old: yeah trust me you’re good.

9 year gap between a 20 and a 29 year old: let me put this into perspective, person A could be in their second year of college and person b graduated 7 years before. That’s weird and they’re at INFINITELY different stages in life.

9 year gap between a 46 year old and a 55 year old: they’re both middle aged, they’re both at the same stage in life, they’ve probably both have had some sense of stability for a while now and probably no wildly violent life changes like high school/college/first job/first partner have happened in a while. It’s FINE.

I know a lot of young teens who don’t understand this. :/

I can’t believe people are mad about a 16-year-old girl

wanting the earth to get better

Also –

What is she supposed to do, motherfucker? Teleport?? Spontaneously develop the ability to fly unaided?

Not to mention the fact that THERE IS NO ETHICAL CONSUMPTION UNDER CAPITALISM

It doesn’t matter how committed you are to fixing the climate you still have to fuckin eat

Corporations do more harm in one hour than any singular human could do in their whole life.

Reblogging for that last line “Participating in the world as it is does not disqualify you from trying to improve it.”

we need the opposite of nihilism. Everything matters.

im not talking about anxiety im saying every piece of art you draw adds to the world. im saying the lone bumblebee pollinating flowers is important. im saying to appreciate people’s smiles and small charming mannerisms. to know everything else has the right to exist and be part of the world.

and on the other side of the coin, i’m saying even friendly banter can hit someone’s insecurity. that even something small can be hurtful so always try to be considerate.

Life doesn’t end at 23. 30 isn’t old. Fetishising youth as the ultimate desirable characteristic in a person is actively harmful to both young and old people. Some of us lost our teenage years to abuse and recovery, and can only begin living when we’re at a different life stage.  Literally knock it off, the lot of you.
