listen Tumblr was pretty toxic in its heyday but it’s weenie hut Jr compared to Twitter now
listen twitter has toxicity baked into its ui.
if they wanted more nuanced and in depth takes on their website they could have extended the character limit again but instead they give us threads and only put one or two paragraphs on your feed at a time. imagine if tumblr picked a few random sentences out of the middle of your long post plus a comment or two to put on people’s dash.
it’s not even that people don’t care about context, the platform itself hides the context.
the fact that the primary forum for politics in our age is a website defined by the mechanical inability to write a long, nuanced take is so absurdly on the nose
at least tumblr hot takes are written by an overwhelming majority of just weird nerds and teens who don’t hang out with other gays… on twitter you can stumble upon any unbelievably bad opinion and discover it was written by an nbc showrunner who married the ceo of a startup that converts rental properties into oil wells. like at least nobody here has money or influence
the experience creating art on tumblr and twitter is so wildly different because it’s like
twitter: you make one post that does not cater to the incredibly specific niche interest you have catered and 15 of your followers scatter like mice
tumblr: half my dash is DC Comics. I do not remember following a DC blog. I follow several DC fanartists and apparently have been for several years. I have no idea when they became DC artists. I have never read a DC comic nor do I have any interest in doing so. I will not be unfollowing.
