A fault with the “technology is taking us out of the real world” people is that it’s possible to be interconnected with phones and such and also take time to notice small things like the lighting or the way the leaves look. The two aren’t actually mutually exclusive.

I can appreciate how beautiful the lighting is and take my phone out so I can appreciate it later. I can listen to the birds while on my computer. I can appreciate the trees while listening to music on the bus. I can appreciate the natural world and the value of being alone with my thoughts without disparaging technology. The idea that these things are mutually exclusive is truly ignorant.

It’s not like I don’t value turning off the technology and going outside and such because I really do, it really is important to disconnect from the information, but there is also value in technology and when using it you aren’t completely and solely at the whim of the internet. The idea that you can’t have free will and be an active internet user at the same time is completely absurd.

also re: teens sitting around with their tablets and smartphones

like, if a kid can access the internet (with some privacy still) while also sitting in the same room as their parents, honestly that’s better and more social than what I did as a teenager, which was hole up in my room at my desktop computer that I couldn’t move anywhere else in the house

mostly what I see from the teens in my family is they will sit and scroll through their phone, but if something interesting starts happening, or a new person enters the room, or they see something cool they want to share, they look up and interact again, because they’re sitting right there with everyone else.

that is waaaay more social than 2002 me, hunched over my desktop for hours and only seeing my mom in passing when I went to microwave a burrito at 1am. way, way more social.

My whole family does this now. We’re all in the same room, but each on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Certain poop heads will shake their heads at how technology is dividing us.

But

Like

What do they think families have done for since ever? Talk constantly while playing educational board games every evening? No.

They’d each be reading, or sewing, or writing letters or some shit, and mostly sat quietly near each other but not bothering each other.

yes this

It reminds me of the whole “omg people on trains used to TALK to each other” argument. No, they didn’t. They read the newspaper or stared straight ahead avoiding eye contact.

People have been finding reasons not to talk to each other for centuries.

windows 10 is garbage so every time i boot up the computer i have to run command prompt and enter

net.exe stop “Windows Search”

so that the shitty goddamned search/cortana feature that i never fucking use stops running in the background taking up all my fucking disk space

before

after

what the fuck is that seriously what the fuck is making my computer be a fucking piece of shit

@baristaboy try this out dude

@lambylin

y’all didn’t even add a tutorial of how to do this so imma put one right here

1. type in cmd.exe into your windows search and right click on Command Promt search result and select “Run as Administator”.
2. Type/Copypase in

net.exe stop “Windows Search” and make sure Windows Search is in quotations. It should then respond saying “The Windows Search service is stopping” and then tell you it’s stopped.

This is only a temp fix though, if you want it switched off permanently then do THIS:

1.  Press the Windows key + R at the same time and type in services.msc.

2.  Scroll until you find Windows Search and double click it to enter its Properties window.

3.  Change the Startup type to Disabled. Apply this change and you can exit out.

VOILA, NO MORE TAKEN UP DISK SPACE

Reblog to save a fucking life, FUCK CORTANA.

Autistic Google search: How to turn my phone’s brightness down even lower?

On iOS, there’s a setting in the display accessibility settings called “reduce white point” that makes the screen darker. It doesn’t effect the battery life at all, it just changes the setting for what constitutes a white pixel. It lowers battery life if you turn up your brightness to compensate it, so if you do want the screen brighter for whatever reason, change the white point setting first.(General>>accessibility>>display accommodations>>reduce white point)

On Android, there’s plenty of apps you can download. Personally, I use Dimly, but honestly any app that does the same thing will work. Just search “screen dimmer” or something to that effect. I haven’t noticed any effect on battery life.

Also, apps that do the same thing for computers exist. F.lux is the only one I’ve seen, and I’ve never used it, so I have no idea how well it works. I’ve heard it works well, but my computer screen goes dim enough for me, so I’ve never used it or something that does the same thing.

In general, “blue light filters” also make the screen dimmer. Same with any night mode.

Concept – Your smartphone breaks. You can take it to any appropriately skilled person to have it fixed. It has been designed for easy disassembly and repair. The parts are available and standardized. You are not forced to buy a new one or spend extreme prices for a replacement part. Planned obsolescence doesn’t exist and things are designed to last a long time – to be upgradable and customizable without needing to invest in an entirely new unit every year.
