You know what grinds my gears more than it probably should? People making fun of children for not understanding random outdated technology. When someone’s like “lol dumb kids don’t know floppy disks are real, they just call them save buttons” or “lol dumb kids don’t know how to use a rotary phone”. I’m sorry, that child is eight years old, where and when exactly were they supposed to learn how to use a device that hasn’t been in common usage in over 20 years? Did your parents teach you how to use a slide rule? Because mine sure as hell didn’t and I remember old people making fun of me for it. We’re becoming these assholes and it needs to stop.
I actually used a slide rule on multiple exams in college, mostly just to see the profs’ faces.
But I am physically incapable of driving a stick shift and destroyed my grandpa’s car when he tried to teach me so…
Last year, Apple outraged independent technicians when they updated the
Iphone design to prevent third party repair, adding a “feature” that
allowed handsets to detect when their screens had been swapped (even
when they’d been swapped for an original, Apple-manufactured screen) and
refuse to function until they got an official Apple unlock code.
Now, this system has come to the MacBook Pros and Imac Pros, thanks to
the “T2 security chip” which will render systems nonfunctional after
replacing the keyboard, screen, case, or other components, until the a
proprietary Apple “configuration tool” is used to unlock the system.
Apple does not tell its customers that the computers it sells are
designed to punish them for opting to get their property repaired by
independent technicians; the details of the T2 came from a leaked
service manual.
You know when people talk about how kids won’t know how to entertain themselves without a screen if they’re never expected to: it’s really true? Like my only source of consistent entertainment for.. since at least I got my first computer.. has been screens. I have a hard time sustaining my interest on things off the screen, generally. Without my screens, I struggle to find things to do. And I can see it in my step brothers. I can find things to do and enjoy them, but my default is always going to be screens. I really feel like my screen problem has effected whether I have an actual meaningful hobby or not. Probably hasn’t, but the point stands. I think it’s a bit of a problem.
I love my screens, I love what they’ve done for me, I love the internet and what it’s done, but I hate that it’s either “this is evil” or “this is great and there is nothing wrong with it” our society /is/ dependent on screens. That’s not inherently good or bad. But I think some recognition of the bad might be in order. It’s not all good or bad.
*me, getting ready to hit you with a sick-ass keyboard smash*:
I see your Palm keyboard and raise an IBM Butterfly keyboard.
WHAT THE FUCK ARE THESE
it’s called “the late 90s/early 00s was a WILD time in consumer electronics”
before apple killed creativity and homogenised design in consumer technology
I mean who the fuck wants a phone that they can either charge or have headphones in but not both? Who? Seriously, it’s almost worse than cords that are uselessly short.
The trend of removing headphone jacks is so fucking infuriating because it’s spreading like some awful plague and as far as I’m aware it’s a small minority of people who actually like it
Mm so time for a.. Take
I don’t think normalizing internet or technology addiction is healthy. I don’t think pretending it doesn’t exist just because some technology has benefits is healthy.
A lot of people have unhealthy dependencies on the internet. This is just a fact.
The normalization of what is actually a serious problem is detrimental to people’s wellbeing. This doesn’t undermine the importance and benefits of technology, but it’s important that it’s recognized.
And this isn’t some “I’m better” type post. I am very much addicted to the internet, Tumblr specifically. And frankly it’s fucking with my ability to function as a human.
I met my best friend through the internet, (@kyeabove ), that doesn’t fucking mean my internet use is 100% beneficial to my wellbeing. It’s not, it’s really not. I’m also not even remotely alone.
Stop fucking normalizing it. This shit sucks, and it’s harmful. The harms and benefits are not mutually exclusive.
The Morris worm or Internet worm of November 2, 1988 was one of the first computer worms distributed via the Internet. It was written by a student at Cornell University, Robert Tappan Morris, and launched on November 2, 1988 from MIT.
It’s trapped on a floppy tho this is some dark shit it has been denied its purpose forever bound to this obsolete storage
am i glad it’s in there and we’re out here
people reading fantasy novels ask “why did the ancient ones seal the evil away for ten thousand years instead of just killing it” but then we go ahead and do this shit
We have learned nothing from every fantasy novel ever O.O
The best part, from the wiki article: “According to its creator, the Morris worm was not written to cause damage, but to gauge the size of the Internet.”
It was intended to do good, but the programmer made a mistake and it got out of hand, becoming viral.
Many users are reporting massive data loss following the October 2018 Windows 10 update. Personal files are being deleted and hard drives are being corrupted in addition to several performance glitches. Users who have received the update are reporting all of their personal files such as documents, music, pictures, and videos being deleted following the update.
Some people have lost hundreds of gigabytes of data. These files are completely disappearing following the update – they do not wind up in the recycle bin, they are completely gone. Other users are reporting their entire hard drives or SSDs becoming corrupted, making rollback and recovery of said deleted files impossible.
In addition to the file deletion, devices with 6th generation Intel processors and newer are reporting awful battery life and CPU usage following the update.
Long story short, hold off on the October 2018 update for now. There are too many glitches and way too much to lose. If you attempt it,
This happened to me last year with a previous update. I lost all the digital art I ever made. I lost all the files of my 250+ page graphic novel… It was horrific, don’t let this happen to you too.
Microsoft put the update on hold but make sure your computer hasn’t installed it already!
