The tentacled snake (Erpeton tentaculatum) is a rear-fanged aquatic snake native to South-East Asia. It is the only species of its genus, Erpeton, and the two tentacles on its snout are a unique feature among snakes. Scientists have discovered that they contain a huge amount of nerve cells, which means they’re used for detecting prey in muddy water. Tentacled snakes are venomous, though not considered dangerous to humans. They are able to stay submerged in water for 30 minutes at a time before returning to the surface for air.
