The brain of a lemon shark, being comparable in relative mass to that of a mammal or bird, suggests they have the ability to learn from social interactions, cooperate with other individuals, and have the potential to establish dominance hierarchies and stable social bonds.
some jackalope: “shark infested waters”
me cupping my hands around my mouth: THEY LIVE THERE
Can we please stop making scary shark movies? Sharks are pure sweet babies that don’t deserve this slander. They just have bad eyesight. Don’t be mean to them.
Actually, sharks have very good eyesight!
They do, however, also have teeth that are highly sensitive to pressure, temperature, and chemical signatures, as well as electroreceptors all around their face, so they can get more information about a Strange New Thing by putting it in their mouth than by using their other senses. Even if it doesn’t resemble food, a curious shark will probably try biting something to get a better idea of what it is. A hungry shark will also bite new things to see if they are edible. This is not malice on the part of the shark; it’s just exploring the world in the best way it knows how.
However, because they are large, powerful predators, these exploratory “test bites” can result in massive blood loss, limb amputation, and even death for the object of their curiosity.
We should not be afraid of sharks, but we should certainly be wary and respectful of them, and calling them “pure sweet babies” and “sharp puppies” and making them out to be harmless is not respectful. They are not malicious, but they are also not innocent angels; they are fast, powerful predators.
Mine is that a goblin shark can extend its jaw (thanks to elastic ligaments in its mouth) to grab nearby prey.
Thresher sharks like to whip their prey with their long tail to stun them before eating them
The first tiger shark pup to hatch inside its mother’s womb devours its unborn siblings until only two pups remain, one on each side of the womb.
I love sharks so much! Here are 5 of my favorites:
1. Puffadder Shysharks curl up and cover their eyes with their own tails, hence why they’re called such! They’re also very harmless and also really easy to pick up, but they’re shy, so!
2. Swell Sharks, as their name suggests, swell up. They’re also mostly harmless and many aquariums have them for petting (and because they’re so cute and when they puff up they’re super soft!).
3. Epaulette sharks use their fins to “walk” on water! They are also used to extremely low oxygen content in the water, increasing blood supply to its brain.
4. Pyjama Sharks have bodies that look like striped pyjama pants, they are nocturnal and like to sleep in kelp beds! They also curl up hiding their eyes with tails like Shysharks.
5. The Greenland Shark lives deep in the cold northern ocean and can live for over 300 years, making it the longest-lived vertebrate, as well as one of the largest existing spieces of sharks.
