In this economy, the janitor might have a damn degree.
Let’s dead the idea that service workers don’t have degrees either
Lets dead the idea that a job that requires a degree makes you better than someone whose job doesn’t require one.
You know I like my physics teacher but I really don’t understand why he feels the need to make comments about us using our phones during downtime. I get during instruction, but.. otherwise. Why? Why do adults in general Feel The Need to Be Like That?
asexuality should be taught in health classes. bisexuality should be taught in health classes. being gay/lesbian should be taught in health classes. pansexuality should be taught in health classes. all sexualities should be taught in health classes. can’t believe this is a thing people are legitimately arguing about.
Asexuality should not be taught in health classes because teenagers are still young and may not know whether they are capable of feeling sexual attraction or not why is this so hard for you people to get Jesus Christ
Car safety should not be taught because kids are too young to know if they’ll ever own a car and might not be capable of driving one
Personal experience here: I got my sexual health education in Grade 6 in the early 1980s. The sum total of discussion about bisexuality in that textbook?
“Same-sex crushes in adolescence is normal, and do not necessarily indicate that you’ll become homosexual.”
Needless to say, not having any accurate information that bisexuality existed really screwed me up when I did become sexually active 8 years later.
I really don’t understand the second poster’s point of view here.
Sure, teenagers may not know whether they are capable of feeling sexual attraction or not at this point in time, but they’re not stupid.
If you tell a teenager something like “some people don’t feel sexual attraction until later in their development, and some people never end up feeling sexual attraction at all,” they’ll still figure it out if/when it hits them.
In the mean time, as a thirty-three year old woman who spent FIFTEEN YEARS waiting for “sexual attraction” to finally kick in, before I finally learned enough about asexuality to realize that it applied to me?
I could have really used that fucking health class.
we need to be taught disability history in school because it is 2019, i am 20 years old, and i am only now learning that the National Association of the Deaf had to take Netflix to court in 2012 in order for closed captioning to be required on streaming sites (source). any amount of accessibility in our lives has been fought for, and those stories need to be told.
all public school anti-bullying activism is extremely transparent and meaningless
faculty: BULLYING IS BAD!! ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY!! THIS IS A HATE FREE ZONE!!
me: hey this person called me a stupid dyke today
faculty: hmm that’s unfortunate. have you tried perhaps, not being gay?
I feel like everyone is against bullying until they actually look at the kids who are being bullied.
The cheesy anti-bullying tapes that they show in schools feature these skinny straight white neurotypical kids who get picked on for no reason. Usually the insults are something along the lines of “You’re a loser!” or “Get lost, freak.” All the kids watching immediately feel bad for the victim, and think “Aw! She didn’t deserve that!”
Then, ten minutes later, they go pick on some marginalized kid without thinking twice. As an autistic person, I was often this kid. The insults I heard growing up were not “You’re a loser!” or “Get lost, freak.” They were “Don’t let the retard work with us” or “Shouldn’t she be going to the special school?”
The problem is we teach kids that bullying occurs for no other reason other than just to be mean. This could not be further from the truth. Bullying occurs because as a society, we condition kids into hating fat, black, neurodivergent, queer, and disabled people. Kids don’t bully each other just to be mean. They do it because if something’s “wrong” with the person, it’s completely justified.
But of course, we can’t tell kids this kind of stuff. We can’t say, “Hey! Making fun of your gay classmate is bad!”
Because when we do, suddenly the phone calls come pouring in, each with a parent on the other end screaming “You can’t be feeding my son that liberal propaganda!”
Anyway apparently I’m the only one in my English class who can see references to heaven in a love poem and not assume that the husband is dead because of the line “then while we live”
Like.. the author is puritan. That’s why there’s so many references to heaven lol
“small enough to ignore” and “doesn’t exist” are two different things lol
