Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?

Let me tell you a story, ignorant one.

Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion “of the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.” (x)

Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies.

Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if you’re called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?

“They were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to… they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust – the Roma & Sinti”. They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because “no country wanted them there”. (x)

Let’s not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:

  • “Forced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)
  • Eviction
  • Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)
  • Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now – all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered ‘criminal’)
  • Concentration camps
  • Starvation
  • Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs
  • Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)” (x)

“First and foremost: THE WORD “GYPSY” IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.

We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT ‘boho.’

Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.

Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.

We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.

‘The word is not yours. It’s ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.’ – biggadjeworld

We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.” (x)

The “x”s in the post refer to sources you can click on and educate yourself with. On those pages, there are more links to become familiar to this slur and the Rromani people.

Also, don’t forget to stop by thisisnotromani!

This is some shit that the witchcraft and neopagan communities really need to get straight. You are not a “gypsy” witch, that does not make you mystical, you are not special, you are just racist. V sorry.

I REALLLYYY need everyone to read this at least three times so there is no chance for confusion.

This is important! In America we are not used to hearing it as a slur, so it can be hard for us to realize it’s one if we don’t run into it or seek it out. Fly across the pond and say it you will get VERY different responses. If you want replacement words for free spirit and bohemian aesthetic, just use “free spirit” or “hippie” or even “flower child” honestly. Hippie Witch sounds more catchy anyway 🌻

Never appropriate someone’s culture for the sake of ‘aesthetic’!!! Learn the history of the words you use. Respect people. Say what you mean (and if you use these slurs, you MEAN to be racist, no two ways about it!). If “free spirited traveler” appeals to you there are suggestions above- other suggestions:

Traveling witch, footloose, wanderlust, free-wheeling, free lance, roaming, nomadic, mugwump, beatnik, avant-garde, offbeat, alternative, idiosyncratic, arty, outlandish, backpacking, bird of passage, excursionist, explorer, gadabout, globetrotter, landloper, adventurer, nonjuror (like conjuror!), pereginator, peripatetic, rootless, scatterling

Thank you for educating people about this!

!!!!!!!!!!

Many people still don’t know this! I told someone in a mom group I was in. I say was bc I left soon after bc some people were being intentionally bigoted “OMG everyone is so sensitive these days. You’re too PC. I don’t care. I’m still going to use the word.” Major yikes! But I already knew that there are racist in this town :/

Spotify Premium ad: “Imagine playing music without interruptions!
Infinite skipping! Replay the song you want! And even do it offline? No ads! Whatever songs you want! For a small monthly payme-”
Me: *nods, turns off Spotify and turns on my MP3 player and does all the things they offer, but for free and with songs they don’t even have*

For those of you who might not know how to do any of this:

  • To convert CD audio into mp3s, you just follow the steps here
  • To play mp3 files, you download an mp3 player like Winamp here and away you go
  • On mobile? There are plenty of free mp3 players for your phone available, too, so check them out

You don’t need to be tethered to an online streaming service for your music. Be free.

You can also rip audio files from youtube and find files all over the internet. It is far easier to come across great and lesser known music if you dont limit yourself to spotify.

Also your local library still has a ton of physical CDs that they will lend you for free.

Some of them also offer free music streaming services, or services where you can download free music (you’re limited to a certain amount of songs per week, but it’s free).

Our audiobooks on CD even encourage you to rip them to your own devices. It’s not like we can stop you…

Autistic Lifehack: Hearing Problems

If someone says something that you only partially understand:

DON’T ask for clarification with a generic “What?” or “I’m sorry?” (In my experience, people will repeat the phrase the exact same way without helping you to understand).

Example:
Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?”
Autistic Person: “What?”
Them: “Do you like pahganabasa?”
Autistic Person: “I’m sorry, what?”
Them (annoyed): “Do you like pahganabasa?”

Instead, DO repeat the part that you did understand, and substitute a “What?” for the unintelligable part.

Example:
Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?”
Autistic Person: “Do I like what?”
Them: “Pineapple pizza?”
Autistic Person: (Understands the words!)

I’ve also had successes with “I’m sorry, I only heard the first half of that sentence,” or actually verbalizing my interpretation of the part I heard incorrectly as a question: “Pahgana… basa?”.

Sometimes that makes the speaker think that they might be mumbling, or verbalizing in a way that makes them difficult to understand (because there are times it’s really not your brain–it’s their mouth).

This is also a lifesaver if you have Auditory Processing Disorder. It stopped the amount of annoyed sighs because ppl thought I was deliberately ignoring them or them saying the same thing but louder (which does not help when volume isn’t the problem)

HOT TIP!!!

You will drink more water if it tastes good. I’m dead serious. Throw some mint in there, throw some lemon or strawberry or a little flavor packet. Your brain likes things that taste good.

You know why people like lemonade? Flavored water

You know why people like tea? Flavored water

You know why people like koolaid? Flavored water

People like flavored water. Brains like flavored water. It’s like being forced to choose between a rock or a rock with glitter on it. You want the glitter rock

I am once again telling you to drink water

And to absolutely FUCK OFF if you’re going to be a dick on this post

It should definetly be noted that if you need a bit of flavor to get you to drink water, that’s totally okay. Do it through whatever means you need. It’s a thousand times better than the alternative of you not getting any form of hydration. Thank u op 🙂

also the purity of water makes a difference. i grew up drinking unfiltered tap water. i’ve hated water my whole life bc of that, and filters were too expensive for my family to afford, so i just avoided water. when i worked in a warehouse i would get super dehydrated because of my avoidance of water, and literally the only thing that would help get me to drink water would be these damn electrolyte flavor packs

and these silly little things literally saved me from dehydration and heat stroke

a few months ago my fiancé found a purification pitcher for $12 and i was skeptical but it changed my entire opinion of water. i was like “if this is water what the FUCK have i been drinking??????” because the water i had before would just taste nasty and leave my mouth somehow dryer than it was before drinking anything???

so yea. water is amazing. flavored water can actually save lives in cases like mine where severe dehydration was inevitable because i couldn’t STAND the taste tap water left on my tongue to save my life. and even cheap purification processing makes a world of difference.

now go drink some damn water.

I AM IN POSSESSION OF A VERY IMPORTANT FACT

Watching YouTube on a browser, at least for me, ymmv, i can turn off my screen and the video still plays.

And y1ts.com works just fine on mobile as well so if you can access downloaded files (idk how it works on iOS lmao but on Android it’s easy)(i think it’s become easier on iOS) that’s how you can download YouTube videos

Inherently getting around paying for Things is going to be less convenient but. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has trouble remembering developmental milestones. I put these together, but can’t take credit for any of the photography. Hope someone finds them helpful!

This is very useful to me i have absolutely no gauge for how old children are and what they can typically do at what ages

I’ve been on Tumblr too long I was definitely expecting this to turn into some existentialist meme

Every writer needs to see this because I’m really tired of otherwise competent novels in which a two year old is like “mother dearest I do believe I am quite frightened” or conversely they’re supposed to be five and going “me hungie!!!”

Another point for why it’s important to own your own copies of music and media, and not use streaming services, is because the copy you own can’t be taken back.

(This is also a good time to remind people that yout*be to mp3 converters still exist).

please don’t tell me you guys are ripping songs one at a time for the quality and getting mp3 -_- here’s what you should actually do:

1. sign up for a free deezer account
2. download python if you don’t already have it
3. download deemix-pyweb for your os (r/deemix will have the link if this one breaks)
4. extract the zip, click on deemix-pyweb.exe, login in w/ your deezer arl in settings (it’ll tell you how, it’s very easy)

ta-da! now you can download multiple songs, albums, playlists, and entire artist catalogs at the same time! in mp3 or flac quality! all organized w/ album covers & info & everything else!

also, you can convert any spotify playlists you have to deezer ones using soundiiz, or thru deemix itself. enjoy! 🎵
