JSTOR still isn’t free, that’s a bummer, but here are the websites I use to get eBooks! If you’d like to support an author you admire, that’s fine, and if you’d like to go through the library system, that’s fine too. I’m just a vigilante weirdo who hates long wait lists and encouraging a garbage publishing system! Also, we’re all stuck inside so we might as well pirate.
add more if you know of any more!
mobilism, this is where i got most of my ebooks from! you should also download an ebook reader onto your phone and your computer, depending on where you want to read. i recommend moon reader for your phone and calibre
for your computer. you will need to sign up to get access to the
downloads/forums but they don’t send any annoying emails, and the free
trial for premium is pretty great!
Z-Lib: also really great, but they have a download cap of five per day. you can get more if you share a post to facebook or donate a small amount. very rarely disappoints and if i can’t find something on mobilism or vk, i know i can find it here.
Lib-gen, i don’t use it that often but it’s very good. real quick, just to make sure it worked well and had sort of Obscure Offerings, I looked up a book I’ve been hunting down (the novelization of the Batman: Knightfall arc …) and it was there! Amazing!
VK’s BOOKS & MOVIES in English Board and VK’s English Bookland: I wouldn’t recommend these to people who are new with pirating things, but if you know how to work it it’s really good! These two boards let you suggest books/ask someone to find you a book, and can search around through their very large databases. They do tend to repeat the same books in their posts sometimes, which means you’ll have to do a lot of scrolling/filtering out.
The absolute absolute best I’ve ever found is archive.org. It’s an online library that has just about everything. (And it’s also home to the wayback machine)
There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without infringing copyright! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.
Please add on if you know any more sites for free images ❤
Thanks for the information!!
I will reblog this everytime i see it
Ok so while we’re at this, I just checked out Unsplash, and it’s an AMAZING site for free images?
please use sparknotes. please use khan academy. please listen to school house rock songs and watch the history of the entire world i guess and tim and moby and bill nye. any documentary you watch in class can be found somewhere online with a quick google. get your books from project gutenberg and z-lib. download textbooks off the internet whenever you can find them. use desmos for a free online graphing calculator. if you’re learning something and you don’t get it look up the wikipedia page on it and put it into simple english to get the gist, then put it back into regular english to get the full story. cheat if you have to. school sucks so bad rn and if you’re like me and you get all your materials secondhand or from the lost and found, online resources are really useful rn; all of the above have helped me pass a class in some way, and i hope they can help you too.
stay inside and stay safe. best of luck to all the students out there.
i used sparknotes for every fucking book i was supposed to read last semester. FUCK this online school garbage, you deserve all the shortcuts you can get
so metropolitan museum of art has a register of books they’ve published that are out of print and that you can download for free! they’re mostly books on art, archeology, architecture, fashion and history and i just think that’s super useful and interesting so i wanted to share! you can find all of the books available here!
Feeling blue? Time to tuna in to our Open Sea Cam and its playlist, swimming with mellow and cinematic instrumental beats to chase those blues away. (“I’m blue da ba dee da ba di” not included)
Paws what you’re doing. This happy, upbeat instrumental playlist is the pawfect accompaniment fur your sea-cret Sea Otter Cam sessions (that’s what second monitors are for anyways, right?)
My therapist only recently understood that when I said, “I don’t know how to make this phone call or make this appointment.” I very literally meant I didn’t know what to do. I can dial the phone, but what do I say EXACTLY? What questions are going to be asked? What do I need to have on hand? What if they ask me something I don’t know the answer to?
I’m one of those people that needs very specific and detailed instructions if I’m doing something for the first time.
Be patient with people. We all have our struggles. Sometimes it can make all the difference in the world knowing someone can spare a few minutes to care about you and walk you through something that’s hard for you.
HOW TO MAKE AN IMPORTANT ADULT CALL
FOR THE FIRST TIME
From an adult who has been doing this for about a decade now:
Remember that about 10% of any office’s weekly call volume is from people just like you who have never done this in their life.
The mass majority of people who run dentist offices, insurance claim call centers, whatever – remember what it’s like to be completely new, and are generally happy to explain the steps and re-phrase themselves if you let them know what you’re having trouble with, and are kind and patient with them.
You’re not inconveniencing them. You’re not burdening them. Call center folks are 1000x happier to speak with someone who is earnestly trying and needs some basic help on super simple things, instead of a pissy long-time customer who demands free shit.
You are a bright spot in their day. A chance to actually help.
I had to ring my car insurance yesterday, which I’ve never had to do before. It was terrifying. BUT when I explained to the call center person, including calling myself a useless adult who can’t adult, and they were very kind. It’s always worth saying “I’ve never done this before” because they’re usually a kind human (apart from P.B in my office, who I won’t name, but you get her on the phone and good lord, you’ll want to throw yourself out a window. I think she wants you to throw yourself out the window too) who will assist you however they can.
