Glass Gem is a unique strain of
corn with kernels that look like
pieces of rainbow-colored glass.
Source

Carl Barnes, an Oklahoma farmer, started growing older corn varieties to connect with his Cherokee heritage.

He isolated ancestral strains Native American tribes lost in the 1800s when they were relocated to Oklahoma.

Soon he began exchanging ancient corn seed with growers from all over the country, while simultaneously saving and replanting seeds from the most colorful cobs.

This eventually resulted in rainbow-colored corn.

When the rainbow corn mixed with the traditional varieties it created new strains, displaying more vibrant colors and patterns over time.

Glass Gem is a flint corn, so it isn’t really eaten off the cob. It’s usually ground into cornmeal and used in tortillas or grits, but it can also be used to make popcorn.

If you love corn and rainbows, seeds can be purchased online for about $7.95.

ill admit california is one of the most wonderful states ive seen in my life… but OKLAHOMA…… *strums guitar* yea i didnt just draw a blank.

We’ve got, in oklahoma, a lot of things to be proud of. some of the biggest oil fields in the WORLD… we developed. We drilled em, we tool rested em, we roustabouted, we done everything in the world in oklahoma.

and we got a lotta things to be proud about. i was lookin at a book a while back and it was givin all the famous men in the world.

the first most famous man on the face of the earth that ever lived, was Jesus Christ

the SECOND most famous man that ever lived on the face of this earth, was Will Rogers

Will Rogers come from oklahoma.

and that 66 highway, that runs from New York City down through Oklahoma and out to Los Angeles California is named: The Will Rogers Highway

Everybody in Oklahoma knew Will, everybody in Oklahoma liked him, because Will had quite a reputation.

He was one of the funniest, wittiest, quickest minded, quickest thinkin men that ever was in the show of business.

He got his start in South America, hed finally come to new york and broadway and he made quite a hit there. And no matter how much money Will Rogers EVER made, he always had a five dollar bill, or a ten dollar bill, to hand out to all the cowboys and all the broke down cowpokes that he met with while he was up in the big money.

Will Rogers had a reputation of that kind and Oklahoma, as a whole state, has a reputation of that kind, and i think you’ll find more of that same spirit down in that country than ANYWHERE back in the fast, and nervous, over worked and over-run, and *chuckles* over-indulgent east, or north, or new york or anywhere else.

Down in Oklahoma, we take it just a lil bit easier, go at things a lil bit slower. ‘course we might not get as many dates covered every day, or as many telephone calls put in, or as many bus rides….

But then, we’ll do just as much on one bus ride, and one phone call, and one meetin’ as, well, a lotta people do on a dozen.

Oklahoma’s first official state flag was adopted in 1911, four years after statehood. It consisted of a red field with a five-pointed, white star outlined in blue. The number 46, in blue, denoting Oklahoma’s position as the 46th state, was placed in the star’s center. The flag was designed by Mrs. W. Ruth Clement of Oklahoma City, and several items from Clement were included in the Oklahoma Century Chest (buried in 1913 and unearthed in 2013). Mrs. Clement donated a flag she made, a certificate of adoption of her flag design, and a hand-written message in which she expressed her hopes that the state flag would never be changed.

Oklahoma was actually rather socialist in those days, note the motto’s reference to “labor”.

However, due to the rise of Anti-Socialist sentiment following WWI and the Communist Revolution in Russia, Oklahoma decided to change the flag out of fear of being further targeting by the federal government. Thus, a new flag was designed by Louise Fluke and adopted as the official state flag in 1925 (a blue field that bears an Osage shield and other symbols).
