Since Mooshrooms can be changed back into normal Cows by just shearing off the mushrooms, this forces me to believe that Mooshrooms are just ordinary cows that have a parasitic, symbiotic relationship with the local fungi.
Through the constant trekking, grazing, and sleeping on the mycelium, the cows eventually will get it tangled in their fur. The fungi attach themselves, sprout mushrooms as they do, and over time will partially take over their benevolent bovine host. This not only gives them a new way to take in nutrients, but also gives them a mobile spore spreader, AND a source of great fertilizer to help grow the large mushrooms.
The cows don’t mind because it is mostly painless (being totally painless to any mooshrooms calves since they are born that way), they retain full cognitive ability and motor skills, and the biological changes the mushrooms give them allow them to safely feed off of the otherwise completely barren mycelium and mini mushroom covered terrain.
The fungis constant presence is vital to keeping up the strange biological changes, so cutting them off allows the cow’s own natural biology and defense systems to regain the upperhand, and kill off any remaining fungus, thus “reverting” them back to normal.
Normal cows will not breed with Mooshrooms because they see them as diseased and gross and smelly.

I think I initially heard of it years ago when I first started watching Minecraft videos but it was actually you posting about it that made me decide to actually watch it.3.

The only hermit I’ve actually watched for Hermitcraft is Grian, so I have to say him. However I also like Mumbo and falsesymmetry and.. some of the others but I’m not really familiar with most of them.8. Which prank was your favourite?
I’m having a hard time remembering the pranks, but even though it didn’t really go as planned I liked the chicken bomb Grian built above Mumbo’s base. I really thought when he shot the chickens with the trident and they exploded out was amusing.11. What build do you like the most?
The only one I’m familiar enough with to have formed an actual opinion is Grian’s base.. but I think that’s really cool. Massive structures in Minecraft appeal to me a lot especially when they’re built in survival. There are a lot of really cool ones though, I’m just not familiar with them.17.

I’m only subscribed to Grian and Mumbo at the moment, but that was for reasons entirely separate to hermitcraft, redstone and building. I’ll probably subscribe to others but it depends on how long my interest in hermitcraft lasts. The first time I saw Grian’s base I was completely blown away. I’m not so used to seeing all the huge building projects going on in Hermitcraft, especially with how quickly they put them together. It’s amazing! I think his room at the top with the birds is super cool.
Yeah, I don’t know what episode it was, but it was somewhere in Grian’s perspective. I also just remembered the prank he did on Jevin (I think) when he was AFK was cool.
And yeah… I’m really just impressed with how good they all are at Minecraft.
