I normally do not like saying this because I trust you and have so much respect for you guys, I am a writer myself, so I understand how hard you guys work.
But
Please
Please please
Puh-lease don’t turn Mater into a joke character in Cars 3.
Please don’t make him do stupid crap for the sake of doing stupid crap. Please don’t make him oblivious. Please prove every single one of his haters wrong by showing that he is not a joke character, that he is not a walking stereotype, that he is not just an annoying caricature who’s only purpose is to make three-year-olds laugh – and please show how sweet, kind, earnest, optimistic, emotional, loyal, and perceptive yet naive he really is. That is Tow Mater.
I understand that he will not be the main focus – just please don’t treat him badly. I know you guys can do it. I love you.
~Sincerely, a passionate fan who has way too many feelings about a rusted hillbilly tow truck
Make him who he was in the first movie, essentially a giant puppy who loves his friend, even if he’s way too eager about things sometimes. He actually contributed to something then.
It’s fucking incredible that Lightning McQueen is such an asshole that it took literally the worlds happiest guy to make friends with him, and he hasn’t made another friend like that since.
Unless we count Cruz, who is “sunny, enthusiastic, peppy”. You have to literally be level 900,000,001 Happy to even be able to put up with Lightning.
And Mack too, that guy is so fucken happy nothin can touch him. That’s why he was the last team member left for Lightning. Just one guy. Just him. Out of like ten.
Mater is a pure force of good and innocence and his goodness just rubbed off on Lightning
I really love how Mater is always with Lightning during his stay paving the road at Radiator Springs
I just thought that was really cute…
I’m pretty sure both Sheriff and Mater himself implied that Mater was put in charge of watching McQueen in case he tried to drive off again.
But, to add onto this: in the very first scene of McQueen paving the road, if you listen closely behind Bessie’s paving noises, you can hear Mater rambling one of his stories to Lightning. The guy’s just destroyed his town’s road and yet, Mater still wanted to make friends with the new guy.
Yeah sure, it makes him sound a little naive, but its really telling about Mater’s character when he instantly decides that McQueen can’t be all bad and thus wants to engage in conversation with him.
As for why he doesn’t believe McQueen can be all bad? Well… Mater was observing him the whole time during the courtroom scene and McQueen was… kind of being a tactless dork. Maybe Mater could relate…
