Here’s another exciting round of “I hope the internet doesn’t blow up”! Rumor has it that you use the language of MONEY you might get people’s attention faster, so here goes nothing…
(You can use my template (3rd image) if you want, just swap out the name and state and whatever else applies to your business model. Make it personal!)
pretty much yeah
my personal bullet points:
I run a small business online
removing net neutrality will limit my customer base
liming my customer base is a great way to kill my business
you don’t want to kill small businesses do you
also maybe worth mentioning: Portugal already did this. We / America can do better. (Patriotism etc.)
Here’s an example of what I sent to all of them if anyone needs more ideas:
Net Neutrality isn’t an American problem. Its Global.
SO you’re in the UK like me. Or the EU in general. High speed internet is a ‘right’ here. We won’t be affected, right?
Right?
Wrong.
If you watch YouTube then you’re in for a world of hurt. Not only will American Youtubers have their uploads strangled, but their viewers will drop off at an alarming rate as people can’t afford the extra and the internet is too slow to watch videos and streams. Less views, less revenue, less money to pay bills.
Even International youtubers will go broke as their American audience drops off. Big Youtubers may still make a living, but everyone else will drop off the platform.
There are far bigger issues at steak here. Censorship, corruption etc, but if you’re reading this you watch YouTube.
Act now or lose it forever. Spread the word to all your fandoms.
Whatever effects America will sooner or later effect us! Don’t let the FCC set a precedent for others to follow!
Yep, what happens here will happen elsewhere eventually, too. If you live in a different country you should absolutely be worried about what your government will do if these jerks succeed.
Remember the last time the FCC nearly killed net neutrality?
Tumblr had this nice big banner at the top of your dashboard alerting any active user about the problem. Guess what has changed since then? Verizon, one of the companies gunning for the death of net neutrality owns yahoo who in turn own Tumblr. Spread the word, tell everyone you can: battleforthenet.com tag posts you see about net neutrality with popular tags so the news spreads.
Last Wednesday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler announced a proposal for new rules that would allow for a “ fast lane” of Internet traffic for content providers who are willing (and able) to pay a fee. [1] The proposal reverses the FCC’s previous commitment to net neutrality and open internet and allows ISP’s like Comcast or Verizon to slow down and censor services that don’t pay the toll.
We have to be totally honest, this situation is seriously grim. But there is still hope. The FCC already knows that the Internet community wants net neutrality, but they think they can put their spin on these new rules and sneak them through. If we can prove them wrong right now with a massive public outcry, we can literally save the Internet once again.
We need to stop the FCC now. Big business groups are already ramping up lobbying efforts with the FCC in swarms since Wednesday’s announcement in support of censoring the open Internet and to ensure this dangerous proposal moves forward. [2]
This is a critical moment. In the last few weeks more than 65,000 people have taken action with us. Can you help us get to 80,000 by the end of the day today?
– The OOOONNLY people benefiting from this possible rollback are corporate shareholders.
– The removal of NN would result in few if any new jobs whatsoever, so any argument that it would help the economy is null and void (btw, we’re not actually in a recession anymore, in case anyone still thought that. The US’s economy, while it has plateaued in actual growth at about 2%, it’s actually pretty high in the business cycle.)
– Limitation and partisan censorship is a major concern (I lied that one is what everyone is talking about)
– In fact it will HURT online businesses, which will damage the small business sector in general.
– And last but not least: It is going to have a majorly negative impact on the education system. I just finished highschool in May and let me tell you, even rural schools are getting more and more technology and internet dependent. Students frequently, if not regularly, are sent home with online assignments. How can students possibly be expected to finish an online homework assignment if they can’t even remotely begin to afford internet? This is already an issue in rural and poor and POC dominated areas, and should Net Neutrality be removed and access to the internet be placed back into money hungry corporate hands, it will be an even more massive and far worse problem that will only perpetuate low education levels in these areas. what if their assignment requires research on a website that their partisan provider has decided to censor? You get a zero. Especially if you’re a college student that can’t afford another $150 a month just to get ok-ish internet speeds.
– This gives me great concern for marginalized and outcast kids. The internet has been one of the very, very few places where LGBT+ and POC children and people in general can go and feel safe and accepted and loved and celebrated for how/who they are. Imagine that that’s the ONLY place you feel safe and okay and then that gets taken away from you. Early teen suicide rates are already high enough.
This is all just a disgusting money grab by the GOP and other politicians who are invested in cable and cellular companies. Call or message your congressional representatives to oppose. Drown them in resistance. I’ve already found several posts with links that let you do that.
everyone please call your congress members at https://www.battleforthenet.com. politely tell them why we need to keep net neutrality, and call as many times as you can.
they will see the overwhelming messages you leave and will be more likely vote on your behalf. please do not wait.
today is Nov. 15. the FCC, under chairman Ajit Pai, will not listen to the public despite millions of comments in support of net neutrality. They are going to try their hardest to kill net neutrality, which in turn will kill the internet, which in turn will help eradicate democracy. it won’t just affect Americans, it has the potential to affect the entire internet, something we ALL use daily. you can bet your ass other countries will see america doing this, and use it as an excuse to do it in their own countries.
this is what buying a plan without net neutrality looks like there:
you have to pay MORE for features you’re already guaranteed to have under net neutrality. and in america, you already know how expensive everything is.
democrats AND republicans both want net neutrality. advocacy groups in touch with congress have said that if your members of congress receive calls from you, they are more encouraged and more likely to take action to stop Pai’s plan to gut net neutrality. after Nov. 22, it will be MUCH HARDER to convince your member of congress.
hey guys, please reblog this version and don’t forget to call!!! if you are nervous about calling, you can use resistbot to send faxes to your reps and thestance appto pre-record your message so you won’t have to speak to anyone. (available in both google play and app store)
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, CHANCES ARE YOU GO ON THE INTERNET EVERYDAY. THE FCC IS NOW PLANNING ON REPEALING NET NEUTRALITY. THIS MEANS THAT POPULAR WEBSITES WILL RUN SLOWLY UNTIL YOU PAY AN EXTRA FEE. WE WOULD NO LONGER HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF USING WEBSITES AND RESEARCHING FOR FREE.
TEXT ‘RESIST’ AT 50409 AND TELL YOUR SENATORS THAT NET NEUTRALITY NEEDS TO STAY.
