let me demonstrate my point wrt doctoring social media using my twitter

image

here’s my original tweet here

if i right click and click “inspect element” on chrome and find the line that says my actual tweet like so

image

and select that line, right click, and click “edit as html”

image

I can type in whatever i want like this

image

and like that i can make a screenshot that says that i like to eat children and use it to call myself out

image

and thats why you should’t believe screenshots of tweets at face value w/o a link to the original tweet

this is terrifying

this is terrifying because no matter how many notes this post gets, people on tumblr still don’t think about sources

guys op is really problematic i heard they eat children :/

This is why archives are extremely important.

Not only does it prove that something isn’t fake, but it also shows a page prior to deletion or editing.

If you aren’t relying on archives for things that matter, you’re doing it wrong. Screenshots are fine, but remember to add in the archive URL to said screenshot. Takes about 10 seconds to do after cropping, so no point not to do it.

HEY WEBSITES

HERE ARE SOME THINGS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOBODY THAT ACTUALLY USES YOUR FUCKING WEBSITES WANTS TO EVER EVER EVER FUCKING SEE:

  • AUTOPLAYING VIDEOS, MUSIC, OR ADS
  • SOME PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE MESSAGE ABOUT HOW AD BLOCKING IS BAD FOR YOUR WEBSITE. BITCH BOY MY MOM DONE GOT MALWARE BEFORE FROM “LEGITIMATE” NEWS WEBSITES, I’M NOT TAKING ADBLOCK OFF. MY ADBLOCK JUST BLOCKED 30 GODDAMN ADS FROM YOUR WEBSITE. I’M LESS LIKELY TO GET COMPUTER AIDS BY GOING ON 4CHAN AT THIS POINT.
  • IF YOU BLOCK ACCESS TO YOUR WEBSITE WHILE TELLING ME TO BLOCK ADBLOCK, I’LL JUST USE ANOTHER FUCKIN WEBSITE
  • IF YOU ARE A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THE FUCKING POSTS IN ANYTHING EXCEPT ~FUCKING CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER~. NO. NO HIGHLIGHT REELS. NO “IN CASE YOU MISSED IT” NO /FUCKING NEWS STORIES/ THAT YOU SHOVE IN MY GODDAMN FACE WITH NO WAY TO DISMISS IT! NOOOOOOO.
  • IF YOUR WEBSITE HAS AN ERROR MESSAGE MAKE IT PROFESSIONAL SOUNDING. I DON’T GIVE A /FUCK/ HOW “COOL” OR “QUIRKY” YOU ARE OR MARKET YOURSELF, IF YOUR WEBSITE SAYS “SOMETHING WENT SPLAT” OR “OOPSY” WHEN A PAGE DOES NOT LOAD I WILL TEAR MY OWN FUCKING JAW OFF AND CHARGE AT YOUR HEADQUARTERS AS A FURIOUS RENEVANT AFTER ENDING MY OWN EXISTENCE IN SPASTIC FURY

benepla:

you can say a lot of shit about tumblr, reddit, 4chan, youtube etc whatever, but at least when you go on those websites there’s cohesive communities reacting and responding to things in ways that have a logic. twitter is like the lobby for all other websites. it’s where everyone hangs out when they aren’t raiding but it’s PVP free-for-all. it’s every single website at once and you can’t even download the gifs from it

Honestly the most damaging thing Facebook has done (and gotten away with) was pushing users to post personal identifying data like it isn’t a big deal

Like the reason it was so attractive to marketers in the first place was that it had successfully convinced people it was normal and ok to post their full names and ages and all of that biz on the internet

Before Facebook, honestly a lot of us found it weird to share identifying info on public profiles

Or even post pics and tag people without asking first

Facebook has had a huge hand in fundamentally changing our expectations of privacy and I barely see this mentioned when people go on about Big Data

I wish there was a way to tell companies that I dislike an ad so much that I will actively avoid buying anything from them because of it

So slightly unrelated but still relevant, generally when I come across an ad that just really fuckin annoys me for whatever reason I’ll go into Google and just type different variations of “I hate ‘x’ product” like 5 times until googles algorithm picks it up an I never see an ad for that product again. It’s amazing.

This is gonna boost use of Bing way more than any tv commercial campaign could hope

since people in the notes are suggesting it: no, right-clicking over the thumbnail and selecting “view image” will NOT show you the image in its original quality

here is a link to a browser extension for this in the mean time.

Firefox extension

firefox + extension = firextension.

You can just drag the image into another tab. You can do this with any image, including ones on webpages that aren’t the Google Image result page. No need to install an extension.

Also, this lowers the chance of “I couldn’t find the creator” when people find images on Google Images. Which is actually a good thing. It’s not really a problem, since it’s easy to get around, and it actually has benefits.

(honestly, I have no idea why everyone is losing their shit anyway. I don’t think I ever used the view image button. I either saved directly from the result or just dragged/opened the image in a new tab myself)
