i wish someone had told me at 13 that depriving yourself of food and sleep is very much a form of self harm
hey kids i know sometimes things are very rough, and feeling like ur in control of ur suffering can be a coping mechanism for a while, but pls eat and sleep, and try to be gentle to yourself if you can
Reminder that “thank you” doesn’t pay the bills. Essential workers need labor protections, guaranteed PPE, medical care, food, and housing. Without providing essential workers with living essentials, we’re saying that we only value their labor, and not their life.
Jeff Bezos and Amazon are a fucking blight upon the working class. He got rich by treating rank and file employees like hot garbage toiling under dehumanizing, backbreaking conditions for shitty pay. When there are this many random strangers across various sectors/departments of a single company sharing similar horror stories, that can’t be dismissed as just a few disgruntled ex-employees. Grievances like these are why I quit using Amazon. They made my life easier at the expense of thousands of hardworking people being mistreated and disrespected behind closed doors. (thread)
The craziest thing about all this to me is there are still people who will say that he’s worked hard for his money and so we should be happy that he’s going to be the first trillionaire. If you are one of these people… fuck you.
Amazon racked up an extra 30 billion during this pandemic and js nkw cancelling the $2 hazard lay…
I hate it when people say the Y2K bug was a “hoax”. No, it was a very real concern that was avoided by millions of programmers, some coming out of retirement, working around the clock to fix the problem before it happened. They succeeded, and instead of being thanked for their efforts, most people just assumed that since nothing bad happened, it wasn’t real.
That’s the trouble, isn’t it? Disaster preparedness and aversion only get noticed when they go horribly wrong. *waves vaguely around at the present* If you actually _did_ prevent the problem, it wasn’t real, and you wasted money and time on something that didn’t happen.
“Why do Greek, Czech, Hungarian, and Swedish, with their 8 to 13 million speakers, have Google Translate support and robust Wikipedia presences, while languages the same size or larger, like Bhojpuri (51 million), Fula (24 million), Sylheti (11 million), Quechua (9 million), and Kirundi (9 million) languish in technological obscurity? Swedish, Greek, Hungarian, and Czech have a wealth of language resources, created one human at a time over centuries. They’re the languages of entire nation-states, with national TV and radio recordings that can be used as the foundation for text-to-speech models. Their speakers have the kind of disposable income that makes media companies translate popular novels and subtitle foreign movies and TV shows. They’re found in countries that tech companies imagine their customers might be living in or might at least visit on holiday, meaning it’s worth localizing interfaces and adding them as translation options. They have regularized spelling systems and dictionaries that can be rolled into spellcheckers and predictive text models. They have highly literate speakers with internet access who can contribute to projects like Wikipedia. (Speakers who can even, in the case of Swedish, create a bot to automatically make basic Wikipedia articles for rivers, mountains, and other natural features.) Language resources don’t just appear. People have to decide to create them, and those people need to be fed and watered and educated and housed and supported, whether that’s by governments or by companies or by the kind of personal wealth that lets individuals take on time-consuming intellectual hobbies. Creating parallel corpora and other language resources takes years, if it happens at all, and cost tens of millions of dollars per language.”
There’s literally a tumblr blog dedicated to DOCUMENTING whenever my opinion changes over the span of 2 DECADES and presenting it as them pointing out my “hypocrisy.”
Seriously… NORMALIZE CHANGING YOUR OPINION WHEN PRESENTED WITH NEW INFORMATION.
Pot is grand and shouldn’t be demonized and blah blah blah.
That being saaaaid. You’re still burning organic material, which still creates carcinogens, and the psychoactive properties can stunt brain growth in the youngins in the memory sector. Don’t smoke with kids, not in the car, not next to you, and not to be the cool parent.
It’s still smoke. People with asthma can still be fucked over, it can still burn eyes, be polite.
It’s fuckin stinky. Don’t care if you’re “used to it” or “like it” don’t stink up other people’s spaces. It’s rude.
The smoke is also harmful to pets. Please keep that in mind when you smoke as well.
^^ especially off you have an exotic but EVERY pet is harmed by it
