Germany had so much renewable
energy on May 8, 2016, that it had
to pay citizens to use electricity. It
was so windy and sunny that turbines
and solar power sources were
supercharged, output exceeded
demand, and prices went negative, so
customers were actually paid to
consume energy. Source

Sea level rise is speeding up

As we all know one of the more disturbing consequences of the current bout of human induced global warming is the rise in sea level, due both to the expansion of the ocean’s waters as they warm and to the rapid increase in glacier and ice sheet melting worldwide. Working out how fast it is happening and whether the rate of rise is accelerating is one of the most vital areas of research for our mitigation efforts, since if the rise is swift evacuating all the worlds coastal cities and replacing the infrastructure is going to be even more of a nightmare than it is already going to be (think Shanghai, Mumbai, New York, Holland, Bangladesh, London etc, the lowest projected rise by 2100 involve s shifting 150 million people, at least). We need the best and most refined projections in order to help us cope with the monumental changes that loom over our heads like a sword of Damocles, the only unknown variant being the speed of the increase.

Scientists invented fabric that makes
electricity from motion and sunlight.
To create the fabric, researchers at
Georgia Tech wove together solar
cell fibers with materials that generate
power from movement. It could be
used in “tents, curtains, or wearable
garments,” meaning we’d virtually
never be without power. Source

Y’all are fucking idiots. Clean energy will NEVER be enough to replace the energy we have now. We’d have to tear down DOZENS of forests just to fit enough windmills and solar panels to get even a QUARTER (probably less, tbh) of the energy we can produce now.

Yeah, sure, when they’ve already calculated that a few square miles of panels in the empty ass Arizona desert could power the whole nation. But ok, fracking and the diminishing petroleum supply is worlds better.

Nevermind that windmills are often most efficient off the coast. There they take up no land, impact no trees, don’t pollute the water, and are conveniently located where winds are often strongest anyway.

And solar panels can literally be built into roofs of buildings and in empty areas like deserts. The sun strikes the Earth with the same amount of energy in an hour that our civilization uses in a year.

But yeah, it would be impossible for us to ever have enough energy from clean sources.

Durr hurr technology is bad and I would rather light shit on fire than have clean energy

I can also testify to the Arizona desert being empty ass. And the California desert. And the Nevada desert.

also…no forests were cleared to make space for Denmark’s windmills and yet they regularly produce so much power that it covers almost all of the country’s power needs. Oh, and then there’s the times when the windmills generate 140% of Denmark’s power needs. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/10/denmark-wind-windfarm-power-exceed-electricity-demand

Friendly reminder that oil pipelines are a scam.

The fact that anyone can believe a limited amount of dinosaur oil is more plentiful and efficient than moving air or fucking sunlight is proof that entire populations can be completely brainwashed.

also, even if we can’t get ALL our energy from renewables (at least not immediately as there is a large initial investment required), even a partial replacement of the vast amount of fossil fuels we use would be a fantastic place to start reducing impacts. just because you can’t do everything immediately doesn’t mean there is no reason to start. the real reason that fossil fuels aren’t being replaced with renewables right now is so that the oil companies and shit can still make profits. its disgusting

natgeowild Video by @filipe_deandrade | While filming jaguars and olive ridley sea turtles in Costa Rica, I had to completely immerse myself in the lifecycle of both animals. Two iconic species revered and protected by the locals. Not a bad gig. Getting close to turtles on land is cake. I would just walk up to them, keep a respectable distance, wait for the females to start laying eggs and then roll camera. In the water though…totally different. Their lethargic demeanor on land washes away in the ocean. They can ghost you in an instant and getting close enough to give them a high 5 is out of the question. But this interaction was completely instigated by the turtle. I was dumbfounded when she swam right up to me and started to chomp on my camera housing. Then it hit me, she thinks my camera is a jellyfish. Sea turtles have specialized digestive tracks which keeps them safe against jellyfish toxins. How WILD is that? It also showed me how easy it is for this majestic creature to confuse something man-made with something natural. So don’t litter the oceans.

I never thought about bitcoins contributing to climate change. That’s actually really bad. How’d you fuck up your idea of cryptocurrency that badly

What

Bitcoin mining uses a ton of electricity

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/ywbbpm/bitcoin-mining-electricity-consumption-ethereum-energy-climate-change

currently, bitcoin mining around the world consumes as much electricity as the entire country of Ireland. and in less than a year that consumption will grow exponentially to equal that of the entire United States. and then soon after it will nearly double the entire planets consumption of electricity. cryptocurrency is like pouring gallons of gasoline onto a hellfire – the more crazed people get about obtaining it, the faster we utterly destroy the climate.

Yeah and never mind the fact that it REPRESENTS NOTHING. It isn’t representative of any actual resource of any amount of productive, useful work, it’s just fucking made up like video game money.

Everything about it is asinine and terrible.

WHAT THE FUCK IS A BITCOIN
