Orbital path of asteroid near miss in 2002. Yah, that’s how close we came to nuclear winter and possible total destruction.

A visitor.

It’s like it’s trying so hard to hit us and it just can’t do it

All I can imagine is every astronomer drinking heavily from 2002-2003 like “There it goes–OH FUCK IT’S COMING BACK”

Thanks moon ❤

Moon: YEET

The moon threw it away yay moon

the moon was having none  of it

The best part about this? They took a picture (read: spectrographic analysis) of the thing and found out it wasn’t an asteroid at all. It was a piece of a Saturn V rocket, discarded in space decades ago and set into an orbit around the sun. That’s right, this motherfucker spent 30 years orbiting the sun, waiting for a chance to have its revenge on the petty humans who abandoned it in the void.

So that weirdly common Star Trek trope in which one of our space probes comes back to fuck us up turned out to be true

enchanted-elytra:

I’m sure people have been saying this since 1.9 came out, but I just want to reiterate how cool I think elytra are as a concept.

Like, the idea of having equippable wings as a rare item in the game isn’t what is so interesting to me. What I love the most about them is that, when creating them, it would’ve been so easy for the devs to be like, “Okay we want there to be equippable wings in the game. Just make them feathery bird wings.”

But birds aren’t the only creatures to have wings! Instead of going the predictable and cliche fantasy route of having bird-like or angelic wings, they made them bug wings. “Elytra” is the word for the shell cases that cover the wings of a beetle (each shell being an “elytron”)

And while they aren’t exactly the same as their real life namesake, the Minecraft elytra being based on this niche factor of biology is still really cool and something I’ve never seen before!
