Scientists invented fabric that makes
electricity from motion and sunlight.
To create the fabric, researchers at
Georgia Tech wove together solar
cell fibers with materials that generate
power from movement. It could be
used in “tents, curtains, or wearable
garments,” meaning we’d virtually
never be without power. Source

Y’all are fucking idiots. Clean energy will NEVER be enough to replace the energy we have now. We’d have to tear down DOZENS of forests just to fit enough windmills and solar panels to get even a QUARTER (probably less, tbh) of the energy we can produce now.

Yeah, sure, when they’ve already calculated that a few square miles of panels in the empty ass Arizona desert could power the whole nation. But ok, fracking and the diminishing petroleum supply is worlds better.

Nevermind that windmills are often most efficient off the coast. There they take up no land, impact no trees, don’t pollute the water, and are conveniently located where winds are often strongest anyway.

And solar panels can literally be built into roofs of buildings and in empty areas like deserts. The sun strikes the Earth with the same amount of energy in an hour that our civilization uses in a year.

But yeah, it would be impossible for us to ever have enough energy from clean sources.

Durr hurr technology is bad and I would rather light shit on fire than have clean energy

I can also testify to the Arizona desert being empty ass. And the California desert. And the Nevada desert.

also…no forests were cleared to make space for Denmark’s windmills and yet they regularly produce so much power that it covers almost all of the country’s power needs. Oh, and then there’s the times when the windmills generate 140% of Denmark’s power needs. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/10/denmark-wind-windfarm-power-exceed-electricity-demand

Friendly reminder that oil pipelines are a scam.

The fact that anyone can believe a limited amount of dinosaur oil is more plentiful and efficient than moving air or fucking sunlight is proof that entire populations can be completely brainwashed.

Also they’re coming up with ways to suspend wind power generators in the stratosphere so literally no land sooooooo……

Deserts are still ecosystems and often not as empty as they look to us, but there are spaces where solar power plants would not be disruptive.

Indeed ❤

there are so many places that could be used to collect safe CLEAN power

TIL Nuclear power is actually better environmentally than coal.

via ift.tt

Atomophobia is a big oil plot tbh

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Newer designs are even better. For example, a molten salt reactor can be designed so that it physically can’t go into core meltdown. Because the radioactive fuel is dissolved in a molten salt compound, an overheating reactor can simply melt through a barrier, pour into a shielded chamber, and solidify back into a solid form.

The best example uses liquid fluoride salt and radioactive thorium, which is cheaper, more plentiful, and less suited to weapons than uranium.

Have ANY of you played fallout?? No thanks

What an absolute galaxy brain take

Nuclear energy is super clean and a lot safer than people give it credit for. The problem as of now is safely storing the waste because it stays dangerous for so long. A lot of nuclear containment facilities are filling up and if we keep generating nuclear waste there’s eventually gonna be nowhere to put it

We have plans, the problem is s we don’t know how long the containment facilities will last. Sure we know it’ll work for a long time but there’s no way we can know for sure the containment will stay safe long enough, simply because these materials have such a long half life that we have no real point of reference for it. We don’t know if our can effectively contain nuclear waste for thousands of years

We’re gambling with future lives here. Not our own lives – we can be reasonably sure of safety for our lifetime, even for our kids and grandkids. But what are the implications for people living five hundred years from now if our containment isn’t secure for quite as long term as we thought?

I’m not saying nuclear power isn’t feasible but I do think we should be doing a lot more research before becoming reliant on it. Because the chances of something going wrong are extremely low, but if something does, the consequences could be devastating, and it could have long term impacts we can’t yet foresee

That being said yeah it’s better than coal anything is better than coal. I think our most feasible fuel right now though is natural gas. It’s clean burning and doesn’t have anywhere near the environmental impact coal does

hey check it out

I have been screaming this at the top of my lungs my entire goddamn life and they just won’t fucking listen.

Nuclear. Is. Green.

Nuclear. Is. Safe.

buhbuhbut a video game told me it was bad

TIL most bottled water companies bottle their water straight from public tap

via reddit.com

I knew this and this makes me laugh at people that spend 5USD on a plastic bottle of “fresh from the mountain stream”. *chortles*

Bottled water costs

what

It costs $0.25 to $1.00 CAD at the store I work at.

It depends on what brand of water it is but honestly bottled water is a massive waste.

Honestly even drinks like soda and such should come in massive bottles and you should be expected to use a reusable one to put it into reasonable portions. There’s no need for all the damn plastic waste. It’s abhorrent.
