Happy Canada day. Racism is not an American problem. Injustice is not an American problem. The Canada we have today was built on the backs of Indigenous people who have constantly and consistently been wronged by our country. The Canada we have today neglects and harms black Canadians everywhere. Around the world, people see Canada as a place of inclusivity and diversity, but we have yet to do our best to continue to make this true. Apologies must be met with action, gratitude must be met with returning the favours. Because we have two national languages. Because 21.9% of us are immigrants. Because we are more than one fifth people of colour, and we are almost three percent lgbtq+. It is wrong to ignore these people, and it is wrong to believe we are inherently more inclusive than other countries, because these people have spoken up, and we have yet to truly hear them. So happy Canada Day, but only if it includes us all.
