sokka has an extreme attachment to his necklace. when people find out about it, just how much he cares for it, they tease him a little. he never asks them to stop. he doesn’t want to tell the truth. he doesn’t want them to know why he cares so much. he doesn’t want to share the truth that it’s the only thing he has that he knows will never leave.
he grows out of his clothes and sometimes it tears, so it’s not reliably there. supplies are swapped around so it’s rarely truly consistent. food’s not always readily available and it’s often a different taste. his mom died when he was young and his dad left when he was only thirteen. yue turned into the moon and suki was taken away.
nothing is reliable, and sokka accepts that early on. everything is subject to leave. food won’t always be there. supplies won’t always be there. people won’t always be there. but his necklace isn’t moving. it’s always there. he’s always wearing it. nothing is reliable but he always has one thing to keep him grounded, however small it may be.
modern AU Toph was homeschooled until she got to high school, at which point she somehow managed to enroll herself in a public high school behind her parents’ backs because when she asked them, they said no.
it’s not a very big school, so most of the students know each other simply because they’ve grown up together. so when they hear that the new girl who transferred in second semester of her freshman year a) was previously homeschooled and b) is blind, they are expecting basically the opposite of who Toph is. they expect Toph is going to be introverted and the Homeschooled™ brand of weird and sheltered.
during Toph’s first week of school, she gets in a fight with one of the senior football players and wins. in, like, thirty seconds max. people do not underestimate her after that.
