not to hate ableism and ignorance on main but if ur child tells u that they dont understand smth and didnt think to do smth thats “"common sense”“ and ur reaction is ‘i shouldnt HAVE to tell u to do that’ or ‘but u should KNOW this’ instead of trying to clarify what u expect and being patient w them then please for the love of god do some fucking research on ur kids adhd/autism or literally any mental illness/disorder before making them spend 18 yrs of their life convincing themselves that theyre just an annoyance to everyone for not understanding things like others do
who’s gonna tell tumblr that executive dysfunction is more than Not Doing Things?
okay
these are the executive functions. impairment of these functions is executive dysfunction
In light of some stunningly Bad Takes I’ve seen about this post, and posts like it, here’s a clarification I would personally like to add.
Yes, executive dysfunction does frequently result in people wanting to do stuff, but not doing that stuff. That’s why people use the term that way.
IT ALSO MEANS A LOT OF OTHER THINGS. Including but not limited to: trouble remembering facts, trouble monitoring time, trouble stopping of finishing things you have started, struggling to regulate emotions (ex. getting very upset by minor setbacks)
And that matters. It matters that we have an umbrella term for this group of functions because they are related, and it matters that people not spread misinformation, even if they mean well.
it concerns me that people really don’t know that adhd isn’t a personality type or behavioral problem.
adhd isn’t someone who’s personality is driven by fun and disorder.
adhd is someone who’s brain goes all over the place looking for dopamine, because it doesn’t make or register enough of it, and when it finds a source of dopamine, it hyperfixates on it. it’s about deregulation of attention as well as emotions.
it’s not a person who can’t behave. a person with adhd can look like a lot of things. misconceptions about what adhd looks like kept me from even looking for a diagnosis, and it also kept myself and others (professionals, even) from taking my suspicions seriously.
everyone’s encouraged to reblog, but if you don’t have adhd, keep your additions to the tags.
Smart people can have ADHD. And a lot of the time, they compensate for the ADHD with intelligence- until they reach the point where they just can’t overcome it anymore, which is why a lot of gifted + ADHD people have good grades their whole lives and then “suddenly” crash and burn. For some it’s college, for some it’s grad school, for some it’s postgrad or professional exams like the bar. Whenever the things they have to do can no longer be brute-forced at the last minute.
ADHD is often lumped in with learning disabilities but it’s really a DOING disability. We know what we should do. Probably we know six ways to do it. The trouble is actually getting our brains to activate so we CAN do it. Sometimes it’s like you’re being controlled by aliens or something because you say “I need to do X” and you’re going to do it and you just. Don’t.
echolalia is maybe. the weirdest adhd/autism Thing because sometimes you just. hear something. or read something. and your brain just goes. No. You Must Say This And Only This In An Extremely Weird Voice Over And Over For The Next 2 Hours
speaking of. ive just been wandering around my house for a bit repeating Fucka You. Basard over and over again
One tien at school I couldn’t stop going “You stole my beans ” for like,,, the entire school day.
Can confirm via lived experience. I’m known for my sweet tooth and consuming a LOT of sugar daily, which never seemed to affect my ‘energy’ levels the way people say kids get hyperactive on sugar. It in fact simply helped me be steadier.
Since I started taking ADHD medication, my cravings for sweet snacks have gotten down to almost zero, except if I need to make a specifically mentally challenging task. Wish I knew this before I only sought diagnosis past 30 years old…
Oh yeah, this is a hell of a thing. Years before my diagnosis I used to snack hardcore on chocolates and particularly candy whenever I was writing and insisted it ‘helped me think’. Turns out that yup, that was my ADHD brain demanding sugar for the dopamine machine to help me pay attention.
(These days I just keep a bottle of high-glucose sports drink handy and slowly sip my way through it when I need to focus instead of slamming back whole packets of Nerds.)
Y’all I just learned that unusually high sugar and carb cravings are a symptom of dopamine deficiency
If you’re adhd and experience a deep and all-encompassing urge to eat cake at least five times a day boy do I have news for you
