parents: you’re so sensetive! this isn’t normal
me, an autistic: yeah there’s a reason for that
parents: you can’t handle criticism!
me, a person with adhd: yeah there’s a reason for that
parents: you overreact to everything!
me, a person with anxiety: yeah there’s a reason for that
parents: stop making excuses!
me: they’re just explanations
parents: you just need to try harder

I saw a post basically saying that they wondered how many disabled kids would be able to survive mainstream school if kids were taught to respect differences.

Honestly? Probably a lot more. But here’s the thing. Respect isn’t the only thing wrong with school.

You could have the most respectful kids in the world and it would mean jack fucking shit for a school.

It’s a great sentiment and all that, please teach kids to respect others. And if you see them growing out of it? Challenge them. Peacefully explain why they’re being disrespectful.

But that means absolutely nothing if the system is still against people who don’t fit into a very specific box. The school system sucks currently and very little of that actually stems from kids themselves being disrespectful.

Parents are disrespectful. Teachers and school officials are disrespectful. The school system itself? Doesn’t work for everyone.

Don’t fucking pretend teaching kids to be nice will solve the problem on its own. Thanks.

(1/2) Hey, I read your post saying that brain scans can detect mental health issues such as ADHD and I was left fascinated. You see, I’ve been in and out of the hospital for seven years now for an issue that is still being investigated and it frustrates me to no end. I’ve done MRI scans and CAT scans to search for epilepsy or a tumour for example, to which all were normal. This was when my doctors started to suspect that my mental health was manifesting as physical issues,

(2/2) and they began to suspect that I was on the autism spectrum along with depression and generalised anxiety disorder because there was no physical evidence to explain my physical symptoms. Back to your post, I would love to know which brain scans show evidence of things such as autism, or depression or anxiety, because it would help me and my doctors a lot since CAT scans and MRI scans showed nothing abnormal in my brain. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Okay, so from what I found after doing some quick research is that SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) and qEEG (quantitative electroencephalography) can detect ADHD in some cases. From what I understand they’re usually used for diagnosing more complicated ADHD cases.

I think those would be the most likely bet since they scan for activity in the brain rather than physical issues with the brain, which is what Autism, ADHD, depression, etc. are.

I don’t understand why someone would fake ADHD for the meds but what is harder to understand is why a doctor would diagnose someone like that within ADHD and prescribe medicine

I don’t know why people are making a big deal out of the fact brain scans can show things like ADHD or mental illnesses now, because that isn’t exactly news. Brain scans have been able to pick up stuff like that for a while. Because they’re brain scans.

Which also makes the, “there’s no medical test that can confirm it” thing bullshit. Because there is a way. Brain scans. It might not be practical as a diagnostic method because of cost or something, but that’s technically a “medical test”.

Brain scans can also be used for gender.

Someone reblogged that post saying that they developed ADHD when they were 15, and I was pretty sure it was a weak attempt at bait, but after looking through their blog, I have no idea what to think.

You don’t “develop” ADHD.

It isn’t exactly secret at this point that I thought I was ADHD (it bothers me that that’s the phrasing because I am most certainly not a mental disorder, and neither is anyone else) in 8th grade. Funny thing about that being, even at the time I knew that I obviously hadn’t had symptoms my entire life. (I have more standing with an Autism diagnosis and even that is beyond unlikely.)

So I googled “can you develop ADHD” like the dumb fuck that I was at the time. There was a result where someone asked if their elderly parent could be developing ADHD. Guess what the answer was.

No, he can’t be developing ADHD. That’s not how the disorder develops or works. However, he could have other disorders that do develop with age, such as Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

However, if symptoms of ADHD do start showing as you get older (middle school, high school, college, work) that just means you’ve gotten to a point where they stand out more. It doesn’t mean you developed the disorder in the same way people develop anxiety.

Anyway, I just thought I’d use the opportunity to rant.
