I actually don’t know if I actually think autism is the best explanation for autism traits that Sterling has, but honestly it fits. And also. I’m autistic and he’s one of my favorite characters and I can do what I want

I mean he has the traits, it’s just possible that they’re caused by other things.

Also like, in my experience. It can be hard to separate effects of childhood from autistic traits, especially later in life. So. Even given his childhood, by all rights given that he went to a boarding school, and what seems to be a pretentious one at that, he shouldn’t necessarily have been bullied, and could have had friends. Unless there was something else *cough*autism*cough* making it more difficult for him to make friends and relate to his peers. The likelihood he was the only one at the school that had alcoholic abusive parents is.. unlikely.

It’s also possible he’s obtuse on purpose, but honestly.. i don’t think that’s the most convincing explanation

It’s also unclear if he graduated from college (i think he did, and evidence points to it being from Georgetown with a degree in Theology, but it’s extremely shaky, one picture in one scene in an animated show with occasional continuity problems does not certainty make, but I digress), but also.. it’s possible that he was at his pre-college school for more than the “”“normal”“” 13 years, though I don’t think it’s ever outright stated in the show

It’s also possible, given the flashback in Once Bitten, that his fear of alligators and crocodiles came from knowledge of them, instead of the other way around. It’s also possible that that never actually happened. We’ll probably never know who Archer’s father is anyway.

His knowledge of guns could be due to his job, but it seems unlikely to me given that he’s good at his job mostly by dumb luck and not skill, and that the more competent ISIS agents (and villains/other characters (Coyote Lovely)) can’t count bullets with that kind of accuracy. While probably harder in real life, especially with multiple guns firing and shit, i do think that it’s theoretically possible that someone could have the knowledge of guns necessary to be able to at least somewhat have an idea if someone was out of bullets or not.

Also, burt reynolds?

Also, relatively saying things like “phrasing”? In a video about the use of language in Archer.. it seems Sterling has a lot of things he repeatedly says.

In terms of constantly telling everyone he’s a secret agent.. that could be narcissism or something as a result of trauma from childhood.. but it’s possible it could be caused by autism?

I don’t really see the stacking rocks in Coyote Lovely as anything noteworthy, as it seems to me it was done to prove a point and it isn’t a pattern of behavior anyway

I mean, Archer is an arrogant, self centered, sex-obsessed asshole, but none of that necessarily means that it’s impossible for him to be autistic

Anyway, like I said, i do what want. I headcanon Sterling Malory Archer as autistic and you can pry that from my cold dead hands

Also one moment I found pretty funny was when he got Kenny Loggins to play Danger Zone for Lana’s baby shower , and he thought she would appreciate it right away and recognize it as their song , which implies that he’s unaware of Lana always being pissed off at him whenever he mentions Danger Zone . Also he seems to simultaneously mistreat Cyril & Ray AND desperately wants to be friends with them . I feel like a lot of his interactions with them seem to come from just ,,, not understanding how being friends works ,, idk I don’t have all my thoughts together rn but there’s a lot of hints

I noticed a lot of adhd symptoms from him when watching the show. I noticed them because I’ve got adhd. Autism and adhd have lists of similarities so I totally headcanon archer as autistic!

He has a lot of impulsive moments where he realizes the consequences afterlife not at all which is a very adhd thing. 🙂

ADHD and autism is basically being considered rude for the dumbest reasons

those reasons are usually 1. ADHD/autistic person didn’t literally read your mind for the Correct Social Cue(s) 2. ADHD/autistic person has a need or a boundary that doesn’t actually harm anyone, but it’s not a Correct Social Cue thing so you think they shouldn’t

3. ADHD/autistic person forgot/didn’t realise/doesn’t know/is just too damn tired to perform the Correct Tone

4. ADHD/Austistic person struggled to understand/ needed a seemingly obvious thing clarified or explained to them and got accused of sealioning/asking in bad faith.

5. ADHD/autistic person got infuriated by Bad™ Sounds™/Textures™/Images™ and tried to keep from reacting, but still slipped up once, and because it’s not a Correct Social Reaction to a Correct Social Cue, they got everyone upset at them for “blowing up over nothing” before they had the chance to apologize.

6. ADHD/autistic person tried to imitate Correct Social Cue but didn’t quite do it Correctly, and now the person they were interacting with thinks they were being dismissive and condescending instead of the reluctant-but-accepting they were trying for.

7. ADHD/autistic person couldn’t spare the brainpower to identify their emotional state until they burst into tears for no discernable reason. They didn’t even feel the need to cry and still don’t, but their body won’t stop. This results in the other person becoming convinced the ADHD/autistic person is trying to guilt-trip them, which in turn guilt-trips the ADHD/autistic person for not being able to stop crying on demand.

8. ADHD/autistic person physically couldn’t stop themself from internalizing a vaguely-negative comment, and then couldn’t focus on anything but the comment. When the others nearby try to regain their attention, they likely won’t be able to without losing patience, which makes everybody’s moods worse once the ADHD/autistic person can see them.

i could go on

9. ADHD/autistic person has learned to perform Correct Social Cues through mimicry, but the people they mimicked don’t perform them Correctly for the group the ADHD/autistic person is currently in so it comes across as wrong.

10. ADHD/autistic person heard a stray comment that sent their mind on a tangent and they burst out with an observation that seems wildly inappropriate for the moment but makes perfect sense to the ADHD/autistic person, because that’s where their train of thought led them.

4 and 10 hit different😔

Let me just add

11.) ADHD/Autistic person tries to calm their emotional upset by stimming and now everyone thinks they are being rude/ignoring them to do a seemingly pointless task that they don’t understand the reason of and ADHD/autistic person isn’t calm enough to explain to them.

12. ADHD/ autistic person answers with the truth to a question thinking it would be helpful but apparently is the Wrong Moment To Be Honest™ and the other part get upset

THAT. THAT’S THE WORST ONE.

13. ADHD/Autistic person asked how they can help. Somehow this is the wrong thing to say

OKAY MAYBE THAT IS THE WORST ONE, FOR REAL THIS TIME.

Hey can we like uhh stop using hyperfixation so loosely? Hyperfixation happens only to people with adhd and autism and sometimes other mental illnesses. It’s not a term for neurotypicals to use when they’re just obsessed with something.

please, for that reason but also for whenever i hear people use the word hyperfixation i go “oh!! look another person who might have adhd and knows enough about it to understand the word hyperfixation!!” and then when i ask them about it they respond like “ugh no! that’s so rude i can’t believe you would think i have adhd!”

The same goes for “special interest.” (never mind that the “special interest” tag is clogged with spam related to the political use of the term…)

Yeah when people say “Don’t assume only autistic/Nd people have special interests” consider: that’s literally why we have these terms. So we can reccognize each other. Allistic people being really passionate about something isn’t the same don’t use our community specific terms and then get mad at us when we use them.
