believe it or not, sugarcoating adhd does more harm than good most of the time. people already tend to not take it seriously but when everyone (without it) keeps calling it a gift or some other sh*t, it seriously diminishes how people view it. the impact it can have on people’s lives is incredible. not getting an education, job loss, problems with relationships, death (either by accident or choice), you name it… so instead of hiding what adhd really is, why don’t we call it what it is… a disorder.

if you’ve got a kid with adhd, consider this: they may have it for the rest of their lives, symptoms may change or even disappear over time but chances of “outgrowing” the disorder aren’t actually as high as once thought, consistent management prevents chronic failure

I’ve been watching some of Jessica McCabe’s videos from her own YouTube channel (How to ADHD) and I like the way that she approaches the subject. She’s someone with ADHD who is speaking to others with it and if you have ADHD, think you have it, or have someone important in your life that has it, I highly recommend giving her videos a watch.

you: october is halloween month

me, an intellectual: october is adhd awareness month

me, a queer intellectual: october is LGBT+ history month

me, a typical queer adhd: oh shit, i forgot about this other important thing

Me, queer and confused: WHAT’S THAT?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or short ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental disorder which can affect both children and adults. Its three main symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity but in addition to that, it also comes with a lot of other difficulties.

You don’t need to have all of the symptoms to qualify for a diagnosis, in fact, the disorder is usually divided into three subtypes. Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive and Combined. Nevertheless, enough symptoms have to be present for it to be considered ADHD.

The type is determined during a diagnostic assessment which screens the individual for certain areas such as impulsivity, emotional lability, attention and so on to determine whether enough symptoms are present or not and if yes, the degree of impairment the individual is experiencing.

I sincerely advise anyone to inform themselves about the disorder because people of all ages continue to go undiagnosed for years, unaware that they have it, simply because they lack the appropriate knowledge to understand and spot the signs. Maybe it’s not you but maybe it’s someone you know.

Awareness can make all the difference. Get educated. And please, don’t just blindly believe what the media likes to spit out now and then. It’s not all bad but for the love of God, do your own research, question things, and if you suspect you have the condition, don’t be too afraid or ashamed to bring it up with your doctor.

Remember, it’s not a children’s disorder. It can affect anyone no matter what age or background. It has nothing to do with intelligence, either.

Support children with ADHD but also support adults with ADHD. Support everyone and get educated.

no offense but professionals in the field of psychology who refuse to acknowledge and learn about adhd are bad at what they do and don’t deserve a job lmao

and don’t get me wrong, i’m not talking about simply not having the time to learn about it but those who deliberately choose not to because they don’t “believe in it”, that shit’s nasty

Since fucking when did mentioning an awareness month become shoving it down someone’s throat

Also since when did mentioning awareness months have anything to do with holidays in that month

me, a queer intellectual: october is LGBT+ history month

me, a typical queer adhd: oh shit, i forgot about this other important thing

Me an asexual ADHD Halloween lover: oh shit it’s spoooy LGBT+ ADHD and asexual awareness week month

Me, a human being: Its great that all of these issues are being talked about but can I please enjoy my favorite holiday in peace

me, also a human being: ignoring these issues should not be considered peace so kindly shut up

It wasn’t ignorance though, it was someone asking not to have these issues shoved down their throat. Making ppl aware is great and all, and it’s a worthy cause, but Tumblr can go off the deep end and be the cold callers we all hate. Especially when they take someone’s comment, and push on the implications, and not the facts.

lmao how can making a post about it on an adhd specific blog be considered shoving down one’s throat. most of my followers, despite having adhd themselves, literally weren’t even aware of the fact that october is adhd awareness month until i made this post. so you and your ignorance can piss off, too, jfc

There was literally nothing in the wording of this post or in any of the replies (in this thread anyway) that implied anything was being shoved down anyone’s throat. Like. Please refrain from reaching. Nobody is saying you can’t focus on or enjoy Halloween, and an awareness month means dick fucking all if you don’t mention it’s that awareness month ever.
