The three mistakes the author talks about are:

– Trying medication to “see if it helps” without thorough evaluation

– Relying on inconclusive evidence

– Failing to consider co-existing conditions

Basically, doctors need to actually do their job with ADHD. Accept that it’s real, that it’s a thing adults and successful people can have, and also make sure that it, whether alone or comorbid with something else, is actually the correct diagnosis. Not jumping immediately to ADHD but not immediately, without evaluation, denying it.

Many doctors were taught that people outgrow ADHD in adolescence, because the disruptive hyperactivity that defined ADHD in a youngster usually diminishes in early adolescence. In fact, hyperactivity doesn’t go away; it affects one’s thoughts and emotions. ADHD is lifelong.

ADDitude (x)

stop acting like adhd isn’t a real/serious issue

funmentallyillthings:

not treating adhd can lead to a lot of problems in adulthood, including:

  • substance abuse and addiction
  • having symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • other comorbid mental health problems
  • binge eating
  • difficulty in school
  • failing grades
  • suspensions from school
  • dropping out
  • not obtaining a college degree
  • making less money
  • changing jobs often
  • lower likelihood of employment
  • losing important paperwork
  • difficulty keeping tracks of bills
  • risky sex
  • early or unwanted pregnancies
  • divorce
  • getting in car accidents
  • criminal activity and arrests

obviously not everyone with adhd will have all of these things be true of them, but they are more likely in adults and adolescents with untreated adhd

“ADHD isn’t a serious mental disorder!”

“More than 50 percent of girls with combined type ADHD (both hyperactive/impulsive and inattentive) engage in self-harm activities and 22 percent attempt suicide,” (x)

“Young children who die by suicide are less likely to have depression and more likely … to have attention-deficit disorder (ADD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)” (x)

“In the UK, a national survey of 10,000 children found that 0.8% of children aged between 5-10 years old reported self-harm, but this figure rose to 7.5% of children if they were suffering from ADHD or a related disorder.” (x)

“The figures for children aged 11-15 years were substantially worse. Amongst this older group, the overall prevalence of self-harm was 1.2%, but this figure rose to between 8-13% for children with ADHD, and 18.8% if depression was present.” (x)

And this is only a small fraction of the information on this topic.
