do teachers really think their discouraging notes on report cards of students with adhd are in any way helpful? “needs to apply themselves” “keeps forgetting their homework” “not living up to their full potential” “can do better!”
yeah, gee! thanks. i am aware!!! painfully so!!! and if i wasn’t already terribly demotivated before, i definitely am now
I understand, and as someone with ADHD I remember getting comments like that on my report cards and being like “lol that’s true” but feeling bad about it. I get it.
But now as a teacher, I know that report cards serve 2 main purposes: 1) to communicate with parents and students about progress in academics and behavior, and 2) to document growth and areas of weakness for next year’s teacher(s). A report card is a legal piece of documentation that goes in a student’s cumulative file until they graduate. It tells me as a teacher what the parents have heard from previous teachers and it helps me know what to do to help a student succeed.
For example, let’s say I get a student whose previous report cards are full of behavior comments such as “struggles to pay attention” or “needs to stay in their seat more” or “is too talkative at inappropriate times,” but they are not diagnosed with ADHD. Old report cards can help back up my own observations and concerns so that I can help advocate for students who may fit the clinical criteria for ADHD.
And if I have had multiple conversations with a parent on this particular topic and they are resistant or do not take my concerns seriously enough, you bet I’m gonna include comments about that student’s ADHD-like behavior. Because 1) repetition is sometimes the only motivator for some parents to take something seriously, and 2) next year’s teacher is going to need the backup of my report card when they have similar concerns.
If a kid is diagnosed and shows good effort or progress, even if they exhibit extreme or disruptive symptoms, I make a point of excluding comments like that in their report card. At that point, the parents don’t need that communication, the student doesn’t need that negative feedback, and next year’s teacher will have an actual diagnosis/504 plan in the student’s cumulative file.
So this is just a long and convoluted way of saying this: comments about a student’s ADHD-like behavior on their report card could help them get diagnosed. But also teachers should never write that a kid with ADHD just needs to try harder, cuz that’s messed up.

i’ve watched A LOT of documentaries on adhd over the years. some good, some bad… okay, mostly bad. but there’s no moment that haunts me as much as the one i’m about to describe. it was toward the end of the film and the interviewer was talking to this 9 year old kid they had been following for some time and one of the last things they asked was “what promise did you have to make to your psychiatrist?” and the kid hesitantly and quietly answers “… that i won’t kill myself”. it really struck a chord with me and still does to this day. this right there is why no one should ever doubt the seriousness of adhd ever again
“There’s no proof of transsexuals existing in history”
And there’s no proof that autistic people existed through history, because people didn’t know how to fucking diagnose it properly.
Careful, I’m sure some of these idiots believe that too.
That’s.. because it’s a fact? Autism is hardly the only example of a disorder being diagnosed more not because it’s more common now or it’s being overdiagnosed, but because doctors just weren’t diagnosing it and now people know about them.
I mean, as far as I know and remember, it’s actually not really true that ADHD occurs less in girls/women, it’s because of issues with the way the disorder is diagnosed and perceived and the fact that women tend to.. not be overly obvious. Tend to. There are exceptions everywhere, but that’s.. it’s not that ADHD has suddenly started occuring more, it’s that it’s getting diagnosed.
There wasn’t a word for being transgender throughout history, or if there was, the words were mean and not in any way, shape, or form anything other than a way to ostracize people who were different. It’s not that there’s not evidence of these things historically, it’s that people are looking in the wrong places, or looking for the words we use for something in a modern context. Which doesn’t work for reasons I shouldn’t have to explain.

Picky Eaters – WTF fun fact
I…..
Y’all realize that if you have those, you’ve likely got sensory issues?? Which means that food texture or taste can be a no go
Which leads to the “picky eating” bullshit
Which, apparently, is an issue, and leads to self esteem issues and a fuckton of trauma.
Stop. Demonizing. Children’s. Eating. Habits.
Oh shit
Oh shit this was me
Texture was always my biggest problem, I couldn’t handle foods with odd textures and I still can’t
Yup. I can’t handle yogurt, raisins, syrup, and other things. I will vomit.
OH
OH THIS MAKES A LOT OF SENSE
I HATE foods with weird textures. Like cheese and mac’n’cheese. I can’t handle condiments either. The texture and taste is just egh
Lol I mean obviously, it’s definitely sensory issues. Which are associated with those disorders.
Also lol on “developing” ADHD, that’s not how it happens
ALSO the only circumstance in which someone’s eating habits should concern you in the slightest is if they have a serious nutrient deficiency. That’s it. Otherwise it’s just.. not that big a deal and really seems like a control for the sake of control thing to me.
The website I have saved that provides resources for people with adult adhd mentioned how we tend not to learn lessons from experiences and it really is tea so now I’m trying to think like ‘wait what happened last time I was in this situation?’ And hopefully that will help
“I’ll remember” is the ADHD demon talking. You won’t remember. Write it down.
bold of you to assume i’ll remember where i wrote it, or even that i wrote it
Visual exhaustion is another symptom of ADHD, which means that if we see something enough times (or we see enough instances of something), it fades into background noise and we fail to notice it.
This is why a lot of ADHD people can stand living surrounded by mess/clutter, because it’s just visual background noise to us. We don’t even notice it anymore.
So if we write something down and see the note stuck up somewhere a lot – or if we write a LOT of somethings down and have a lot of notes hanging around – then we’re even less likely to think of/remember the thing because it’s just part of the scenery now.
ADHD is the Catch-22 of brains.
A very good thing to know about ADHD. Don’t fall into the trap.
A lot of folks in the comments are talking about writing on themselves or setting phone/calendar reminders. Your mileage may vary on those. You may also want to consider ways to set a habit of referring back to a planner or similar every day/hour.
To get those brain juices flowing, check out this Buzzfeed article on different ways folks with ADHD stay on top of things.
Readers, let us know if you have specific advice for this situation!
This is why sticky note reminders don’t work??

VISUAL BACKGROUND NOISE?!
THERE’S A WORD FOR IT?
Always reblog “THAT’S WHAT THAT IS???” posts. Chances are someone hasn’t seen it that needs to.
say it with me now
