it’s really telling that like 90% of “annoying adhd behavior” parents complain about are kids expressing energy or enthusiasm. like i don’t trust adults socialized to hate joy either.

“if i knew you were autistic/adhd/mentally ill i wouldn’t have treated you that way”
haha okay i know this sounds pretty wild but hear me out buddy 😉 to humiliate invalidate and demean another person repeatedly is actually never okay so Fuck You Anyways
As an autie w adhd can you tell me the difference between focus problems or processing problems? Like, reading for example. It’s common for adhd people to have problems choosing a focus, so say if a clock is ticking they may not be able to read their book page cause they can only focus on the clock. Can you add any insight into focus/processing and how you tell the difference personally? (Love the blog 💚)
The way I see it is like this, pretend 2 people are reading the same book, one has focusing problems, the other has processing problems
The one with problems focusing may, as you said, be distracted on a clock or other background noise, and thus had trouble reading
The one with the processing problems may be looking at words, but the paragraphs could be too long, making it difficult to process and understand the words. They may have trouble putting the words into images and therefore have trouble imagining the things the book is describing. Sounds can also be an issue, but similarly to the paragraphs, it may make it hard to understand the words the person is trying to read
assuming that everyone around you is neurotypical and/or mentally healthy is narrow minded, unrealistic, and honestly just kinda dumb. and so is expecting everyone around you to function at a neurotypical and/or mentally healthy level. some people (and it’s definitely more than you think) literally cannot do things that others can or find easy to do. additionally, expecting people to disclose their entire life story and/or any of their diagnoses is invasive and exhausting, and shouldn’t be a requirement for being taken seriously/for not automatically participating in societally deemed normal things.
so my cousin once explained exactly why we both have problems taking notes (xe have ADHD, I’m autistic and dyslexic)
Taking notes for most people is as follows:
the teacher hands you an article and tells you the red text is important.
There is red text and black text. They highlight or copy down the red text.Taking notes for us is as follows:
the teacher hands you an article and tells you the red text is important.
There is only red text. You know there should be red text and black text, but yours is all red for some reason.
You have 3 options: Copy all of it (notes are useless), guess (notes are useless), copy none of it (notes are useless).
finding out people dont usually add numbers by first adding something to make a ten (for example 7+6= 7 plus 3 is 10 plus another 3 is 13) & that its actually an adhd thing is the WILDEST shit literally ive lived like 10 years (or however old i was when i learned to add and stuff) thinking thats how everyone does it. what the fuck
What
It’s also an autism thing, apparently.
W H A T
Oh yeah! This is also part of why autistic people/people with adhd struggle in math classes. Our brains process math and numbers in a totally different way. Many people on the spectrum struggle with the “show your work” part of math because we can’t exactly tell you why it works/how it works. We just kinda do it
I literally don’t know how else you’d do that problem unless you have it memorized or process math incredibly quickly

Mm I think the reason some people cling to diagnostic labels whether they have them or not is because they feel like their struggles or emotions are less “valid” if they don’t have that diagnostic label
You are you, you have the same needs an abilities, the same thoughts and feelings, whether or not you reach the criteria for a disorder. You are the same person, and therefore just as valid, whether you have a disorder or not.
A diagnosis or lack thereof does not change who you are.
why do people take adderall for fun lol
lots of people take it recreationally and while im generally not against recreational use of stuff like weed or mushrooms…adderall? fucking why lol.
same goes for speed. like mdma i get cause it makes u happy and shit but speed just fucking hypes u up for no reason. same with adderall for people without adhd or narcolpsy or whatever. why would u wanna be hyper and twitchy all the time, chill
One of my co-workers takes it because he says it gives him hyperfocus and the ability to get several days worth of work done in one day, whether that’s school, housework, work work.
But taking it just to take? Yee I dunno.
idk how to say this nicely but your coworker’s…well, wrong lol
adderall compensates for deficits, it doesn’t actually up anyone’s work rate or ability to concentrate. when it comes to adhd, it supplements more dopamine to the brain’s reward center, which (very simply put) in turn makes it so the reward center actually rewards people with adhd for concentrating on certain stuff. lots of studies have been done on this, and it showed that by far most neurotypicals who use adderall experience a placebo effect more than anything else, and often they seem to think they can work better, but in actuality their brain is just tricking them and often their performance actually decreases cause theyre just rushing through their work instead of actually being able to concentrate better
a lot of students use it too and swear it makes them concentrate better, but for neurotypicals no actual real improvement in performance has been found. its just placebo
like if it works, even as a placebo, it works i guess but fucking around with meds without a prescription or knowing what it actually does is never smart
I, too, love sniffing an empty cup and imagining how nice it would be to have something to drink.
Literally every half-blood in Percy Jackson is ADHD and dyslexic. It’s mentioned at least a hundred times.
imagine if you were at a gathering and the only beverage available was coffee but you’re a person who doesn’t like to drink coffee. yet everyone keeps telling you about coffee, despite you telling them that it’s not your thing.
now imagine if this was the same with representation of certain characters. imagine if there was only one popular series which depicts those characters but you’re a person who doesn’t like that one popular series. yet everyone keeps telling you about that one series…
that’s what it feels like to look for representation of adhd in the media. people love to bring up percy jackson, which is not a problem per se because, yes, we absolutely need it among the thin web of representation we have, but it’s truly been years and yet there’s still a clear lack of new characters with adhd. that’s a problem we should not forget to acknowledge.
