one helpful thing to do with psychotic people is, if you’re joking about something unreal and a psychotic person wants you to clarify, actually fucking clarify that it’s real instead of treating it as a joke or getting annoyed when we want to see proof. seriously, the amount of times i’ve had this happen, even in family.
to give an example if this doesn’t make sense:
one time my mom and aunt were joking around about whether or not a house on a certain street exists and treating it as some sort of conspiracy. I got freaked out and demanded I go to the spot the house is and see with my own eyes if it’s real. well, no one took me seriously, so I just had a full on mental breakdown over this fucking house because I DIDN’T KNOW IF I WAS IN REALITY. it’s embarrassing to explain later on. if someone is genuinely distressed by the idea of something not being real, just be honest for a second. this can be TERRIFYING.
it sucks because I see so many posts on how you should explain sarcasm to people who don’t get it, but never unreality. instead you all seem to assume just tagging things “unreality” solves the problem. guess what, those tags only exist online, and psychotic people have to live offline too. pretty simple!
