i’ll be honest, as someone who likes to figure out website algorithms, the only conservative idea youtube actually successfully cracked down on is qanon. I was looking up this song made by a qanon believer like two years ago because it’s funny and finding it was nearly impossible–the majority of videos for ANY qanon search are negative commentary on qanon, AND there is a disclaimer under a lot of qanon videos–but also, even in this case it isn’t youtube simply hating conservatives. they only really started cracking down on qanon after the capitol riot because they don’t want bad PR or blame for the spread of qanon.

the logical conclusion is that big tech censorship is influenced primarily by two things: the profit motive and government actions/policy. it’s often a preemptive measure as well–the companies are ensuring they aren’t held liable for anything in the future.

another fun algorithm observation of mine:

ever since tiktok was bought by a US company my “for you” page often comes up with pro-US, anticommunist videos despite me clicking “not interested” on all of them and only following political accounts with the exact opposite politics and tags. videos on police brutality in the US that were previously up have also been taken down. so, ironically the US is censoring the platform it supposedly saved from censorship. no one should be surprised though, every country’s government wants its media slanted in some way so citizens at large are less opposed to government policy. it’s just logical, honestly, but not in a good way.
