Hey can we like uhh stop using hyperfixation so loosely? Hyperfixation happens only to people with adhd and autism and sometimes other mental illnesses. It’s not a term for neurotypicals to use when they’re just obsessed with something.
please, for that reason but also for whenever i hear people use the word hyperfixation i go “oh!! look another person who might have adhd and knows enough about it to understand the word hyperfixation!!” and then when i ask them about it they respond like “ugh no! that’s so rude i can’t believe you would think i have adhd!”
The same goes for “special interest.” (never mind that the “special interest” tag is clogged with spam related to the political use of the term…)
Yeah when people say “Don’t assume only autistic/Nd people have special interests” consider: that’s literally why we have these terms. So we can reccognize each other. Allistic people being really passionate about something isn’t the same don’t use our community specific terms and then get mad at us when we use them.
