One weird quirk about tumblr’s filter system is that if you filter out a particular tag or specific content, and one out of the hundreds of persons who reblogged a certain post tagged it as one of those tags, well then tumblr hides the post from you.

Even if the OP did not use said tag, and even if the person who most recently reblogged it did not use that tag.

Let me explain.

Say I filter out the tag #neon. For whatever reason. In this hypothetical scenario I don’t like neon colors because they’re too bright (note I’m actually neutral towards neon colors if used appropriately, for any neon fans who might be reading this post.)

So I filter out the tag. Then on my dashboard I notice someone I follow has a post that is hidden from me, and tumblr says that post is hidden because it contains the filtered content #neon. But I know that that person I follow is not a big fan of neon colors, and is in fact more into pastels.

I click on “view post” and sure enough there are no neon colors to be seen. The person I follow did not tag it as #neon. I check the source and as it turns out the OP did not tag it as #neon either. My theory? someone else reblogged that post and talked about neon colors somewhere in the post or in their tags and tumblr decided that that was enough for them to hide that post from me.

Now I don’t dislike this entirely. Sometimes the OP and others will forget to tag a post appropriately and I end up seeing content I specifically wanted to filter out.

But I still think this should be improved in some way.
