why do people have such a hard time understanding that no one was ever meant to sympathize with thanos, he was just written with depth

literally HE as a character would have wanted you to, but that was part of his character. he’s cruel and ruthless and wants to destroy half of all life, no one was ever supposed to sympathize with that and he wasn’t written for you to. he was written as a character that had an INCREDIBLY warped view of life, so far that he thought what he was doing was right, and got emotional over “”how hard it was.”” doesn’t mean we were supposed to agree with him. all it means is that he was a completely twisted person. 

abusive parents talk that shit all the time about how “this hurts me more than it hurts you!!!” yeah like the hell it does (/s). they may “feel hurt” but they still do it because “they have to.” thanos is the same way. 

stop fucking going off about “why did they write thanos as a sympathetic villain!! i don’t feel bad for him!!!” you’re not supposed to. god. 

i mean how many people in the world are like that? people that do terrible things in the name of “what’s right”

they believe they’re entirely justified and it may “hurt” them, but that doesn’t make it right, nor does it make them deserving of sympathy. those are real people that exist in the world. politicians, abusive parents, these people are all around us, willing to do atrocities “for the greater good” with no idea that what they’re doing is actually what’s wrong. 

that is the kind of villain thanos is. never, ever, were we supposed to think “hey maybe he’s right cause he’s sad about it.” 

thanos crying from killing gamora wasn’t to show him as “ohhh see he really DOES love her!!! we should feel bad for him!!!!” it was demonstrating how fucking TWISTED AND DELUSIONAL he is. he, in his own disgusting way, believed he loved gamora, and believed doing the right thing needed her killed. THAT DOES NOT MAKE HIM RIGHT NOR WERE WE EVER SUPPOSED TO THINK THAT. same thing with the “what did it cost?” scene. 

thanos believed so strongly he was right, SO FUCKING STRONGLY, and made such a deal out of “it’s so hard…” like boo fucking hoo, you’re a mass murderer. the point wasn’t to feel bad for him, but to give his character depth. he believed so much in what he was doing, but belief in what you’re doing doesn’t make you inherently right. like i said before, war criminals may believe fully in what they’re doing. the nazis believed fully in what they were doing. abusive parents believe fully in what they’re doing. it may “hurt” the person doing it but they do it anyway because they think it’s justified. STILL NEVER MAKES THEM RIGHT. they may cry “but i had to!” but they didn’t. they didn’t have to. we’re not supposed to feel bad for them, even if they wish we did. 

god life would be great if evil people were just flat out evil, but most of the time they think what they’re doing is the right thing. but that doesn’t make them right or deserving of our pity. thanos is the same.
