autstudy:

I’ve just read an article containing studying advice from university professors and man, it is bizarre, borderline delusional. One of the advice there was ‘for every hour you spend in class you should spend two more hours studying at home’. And yes okay I don’t spend that much time in university, maybe 4-5 hours a day on average, but still… if I double that and add that to time spent in class I get to at least 12 hours which is more than most people work a day at paying jobs.

And some say you should study on your own three hours a week for every ECTS points you have and man… that is just physically impossible. My semester includes 30 ECTS points which, if you follow this advice, amounts to 13 hours of studying at home per day. 13 hours every single day including weekends and holidays. I’m sorry but what the fuck. Even a 100% healthy, abled, neurotypical student who does nothing but study (so no job, no housework, no everyday commutes to school, etc) would not be able to do that!

I mean, even if you add up all of the ECTS hours (which actually do include studying at home as well as lectures and classes) you get to around 8 hours of studying every day including weekends and holidays which is hard to balance with taking care of yourself and having some sort of life. To put that in perspective, 8 hours a day equals 56 hours a week, while a typical work week is considered to include 40 hours (with 38 hours a week average for US). See the contrast?

Hell knows if this is how it is supposed to be or how it has always been but tbh I’m starting to sympathize with our neurophysiology professor who allows and even encourages napping during his (or other) lectures. Like… we are people. We should be able to have a life.
