Can we please stop making scary shark movies? Sharks are pure sweet babies that don’t deserve this slander. They just have bad eyesight. Don’t be mean to them.

Actually, sharks have very good eyesight!

They do, however, also have teeth that are highly sensitive to pressure, temperature, and chemical signatures, as well as electroreceptors all around their face, so they can get more information about a Strange New Thing by putting it in their mouth than by using their other senses. Even if it doesn’t resemble food, a curious shark will probably try biting something to get a better idea of what it is. A hungry shark will also bite new things to see if they are edible. This is not malice on the part of the shark; it’s just exploring the world in the best way it knows how.

However, because they are large, powerful predators, these exploratory “test bites” can result in massive blood loss, limb amputation, and even death for the object of their curiosity.

We should not be afraid of sharks, but we should certainly be wary and respectful of them, and calling them “pure sweet babies” and “sharp puppies” and making them out to be harmless is not respectful. They are not malicious, but they are also not innocent angels; they are fast, powerful predators.
